Let's explore the potential of tuna fishery and its correct management for a sustainable future! The huge potential of tuna fishery in Indonesia can make a significant contribution to national fishery production. However, despite its potential, overfishing and not being environmentally friendly can be a serious challenge in managing tuna fishery. Interestingly, given that tuna is a highly migratory fish group, its management does not involve enough local and regional stakeholders, but various parties in international cooperation. Therefore, at the Marine Talk, we'll discuss the potential of tuna fisheries and how to manage them sustainably. Join us on this edition of Marine Talk. Go mark your calendar! 📆Thursday, 27 June 2024 🕒03.00 PM - 05.00 PM 📍Zoom link will be sent, but register yourself first by clicking https://lnkd.in/grtHyqHj! See you all around! ✨ #SeaForAll

Phuc Loc fishmeal factory in Ba Ria Vung Tau, Vietnam, passed the audit for the MarinTrust standard under Improver Programme of Marine Ingredients. The first in Vietnam! It is an emotional moment for the FIP Vung Tau team. Against much advice that we cannot beat the system of hiding facts and buying your way out, we’ve shown that with dedication and hard, honest work, one can have real results and for the long term. One of the key points was the development of a Fishery Traceability Database, making it possible to monitor all evidenced steps from fishery to fishmeal delivery. If it can be done with the most complicated fishery, multispecies trawl, it surely can be done for all other fisheries. We hope that this moment helps more fishermen, factories and governmental departments to find the courage to do the right thing and act towards truly sustainable fishery. This is just a first step and we have a long way to go before we actually know how much and what fish there are in the Vietnamese waters, determine what we all need to do to maintain or improve the stock and ecosystem and finally also actually do those things. Today we celebrate, tomorrow we continue our journey for sustainable fishery in Vietnam.

I am delighted to share that today, Chile announced at the plenary of the Our Ocean Conference in Greece its commitment to join the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI). This is a major step in support of global fisheries' transparency, which, in the work of the FiTI, means the implementation of the FiTI Standard. The Standard is a set of guidelines for governments to publish specific information about their fishing sector to improve accountability and participatory governance. By making this information publicly available, the FiTI Standard aims to improve resource management, promote sustainable fishing practices, and combat overfishing. Chile is among the top five exporters of seafood products worldwide and the single largest exporter in the Americas. Chile has joined Ecuador as the second Latin American country to commit to the FiTI. Ecuador is the largest tuna fishing nation in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. With both these countries joining the FiTI, the leaders in the sector are sending a strong message: transparency in the fishing sector is indispensable to ensure sustainability. Without data available for public scrutiny, we will not be able to fulfill the associated SDGs. Congratulations, Chile, for leading the way! #FiTI #Fisheriestransparency #OurOceans2024 #Chile #sustainability #FisheriesTI #Ecuador --

Iceland, EU negotiating deal for whiting quota in Irish waters celand is in “advanced consultation” with European Union officials on a deal allowing access to Irish waters to catch EUR 22.5 million (USD 24.6 million) worth of whiting stocks, according to Irish Fish Processors Organization (IFPO) CEO Aodh O Donnell. O Donnell criticized the negotiations, saying the deal will have “no reciprocal benefit for Ireland.” A spokesperson for Iceland’s Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries confirmed to SeafoodSource that the country is “exploring closer cooperation with the E.U. on fisheries.” “Iceland maintains an active dialogue with other countries bordering the Northeastern Atlantic on all issues regarding fisheries,” the spokesperson said. “Sharing of straddling stocks such as mackerel, redfish, and other stocks, as well as bilateral exchange of quotas and access for fishing, are among the topics of these negotiations. Bilateral agreements have been made with other countries such as Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Norway. During the last 12 months, there have been talks with the aim of exploring closer cooperation with the E.U. on fisheries. No further comments can be made on the topic at this point.” According to O Donnell, Ireland has suffered from decisions made in Brussels on access for Britain and Norway. “The E.U. already threw Ireland under the bus ... 'Ocean accounts can strengthen how a policy is implemented, including to measure whether a policy is effective and...the positive outputs for both the economy and the resources.' Last week, Annisya Rosdiana and Heidi Retnoningtyas from Fisheries Resource Center of Indonesia (FRCI) of Rekam Nusantara Foundation joined Mongabay to discuss #OceanAccounting in Indonesia. The pair discussed the use of #OceanAccounts in Indonesia to compile data that was previously fragmented. Now, the data from ocean accounts is used to inform policy decisions, particularly related to the conservation and restoration of the country's seagrass meadows, mangrove forests and coral reefs.
