Founder, Wild Adventures Melbourne (WAM), a Certified B-Corp, and Positive Impact Tourism Specialist at The Tourism Collective. Developing Tourism destinations and operators through experiences, workshops and mentoring.
How does your business support and protect biodiversity where you operate? Today is International Day For Biological Diversity. Tourism is not just a victim of climate change, it also contributes to the problem, and that includes biodiversity loss. The future of tourism relies on nature flourishing, so it would be shortsighted of Wild Adventures Melbourne (WAM) to operate in a way that delivers extraordinary experiences in Australia's spectacular and iconic nature, yet did nothing to support and protect ecosystems and biodiversity. As a tourism operator, i'm acutely aware that WAM needs to be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem. That has been in our DNA since the very beginning. This is why I created the WAM 4 Project. The WAM 4 Project is dedicated to supporting the long-term conservation and protection of nature, wildlife and culture on the Mornington Peninsula and surrounds so that it can thrive and be enjoyed for generations to come. You can find out more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/guZSc-9M WAM strives to protect, restore and enhance biodiversity in multiple ways including supporting restoration of reefs and kelp forests, planting native trees and other plants, saving energy, cleaning up eliminating and reducing waste, ethical supply chains and more. We will be posting more soon and how WAM is connecting the dots with the impact on nature and direct actions we are taking to cause a ripple effect of positive difference. #biodiversity #internationaldayforbiologicaldiversity #positiveimpacttourism #ecotourism

A sense of home. In the heart of South Africa’s bushveld, where the wild life roams in the horizon, lies a small-but-growing town called Hoedspruit. Its vast, open skies and rich wildlife called me home for the first time in my early 20s. At first, it was its promise of adventure that brought me in. The more I returned, something deeper took root. Defined by more than its scenic beauty, the town is a collective of connection to nature. Known for its flourishing ecotourism industry, Hoedspruit attracts those seeking both a connection to wildlife and community. Local entrepreneurs and a vibrant social fabric integrates professional and personal connections into one’s daily life. I found myself enriched by not just the land, but the people who lived within it. The townsfolk, with their warm smiles and open hearts, welcomed me into a close-knit community full of childhood stories and later-in-life newfound homes. From the local markets to the science talks and trail running in the mountains, every interaction became an invitation to the town’s heart. Hoedspruit is a unique fabric made of its social and natural world. It has marked a profound insight in me. There’s a term for this sense-of-place feeling. Topophilia derived from the Greek words “topos” (place) and “philia” (love or affection) describes the bond between people and place. From hometowns to natural landscapes and urban places; we all share our unique connection to space(s). Nostalgia. Belonging. Solace. Safety. Serenity. What a wonderful world to find a sense of home(s) even if it’s for a fleeting moment.
