I'm honored to have been interviewed by Authority Magazine. Excerpt from the interview: Based on your experience and success, what are your top five tips for creating more inclusive workplaces? 1. Seek out the diamonds in the rough: the vulnerable, downtrodden, awkward, different, and lonely. They are often the brightest gems. 2. Don’t limit your DEI initiatives to ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. Seek out those who think differently and come from a vast variety of backgrounds and experiences. 3. A formal education does not always equate to intelligence or wisdom. Some of the brightest minds often lack a formal education. 4. Seek to understand. It is tough to empathize with another unless you’ve walked in their shoes, and even then, it’s not identical. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t show compassion and try to understand. When I was new to America and didn’t speak any English, I remember being excluded from many activities or not joining simply because I did not understand anyone. I can still recall a kid once coming over, placing his arm around me, and asking me to join them in a game of kickball. That gesture, though simple in nature, meant the world to me, as it does to most of those we invite in a kind and genuine manner. 5. Don’t judge a book by its cover: My oldest daughter, Kayla, was born without arms, presenting clear limitations. I’ve often worried about how she would navigate the business world. However, watching her blossom into a beautiful, young, strong woman, I’m confident that she will thrive. Having endured life’s challenges, she possesses the resilience to overcome any obstacle. We mustn’t always seek to eliminate every hurdle; some are essential for our growth and serve as the greatest springboards and blessings.

Corporate citizenship is vital for businesses in smaller communities like Jersey. By actively engaging in local initiatives, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting the local economy, companies can foster stronger relationships with the community while ensuring long-term success. Following the principles of the Good Business Charter (GBC) helps businesses take meaningful action, from local philanthropy to reducing their environmental footprint. Engaging in corporate citizenship builds trust, improves brand loyalty, and strengthens both the business and the community it serves. To begin fostering corporate citizenship, businesses can take a few key steps: 1. **Support Local Economies:** Hire locally, partner with local suppliers, and reinvest in the local community through sponsorships or charitable activities. 2. **Environmental Sustainability:** Implement sustainability initiatives that help reduce your carbon footprint, particularly crucial in island economies. 3. **Engage in Local Governance:** Advocate for policies that benefit both businesses and the community, such as environmental regulations and fair business practices. 4. **Transparency and Communication:** Maintain open lines of communication with stakeholders, ensuring that the community understands and supports your initiatives.
