The Zero Waste Hierarchy is the best tool for understanding the steps that we need to take collectively (and individually, where possible) to minimise our waste and to address climate change. It is like a funnel where the biggest and best options are at the top - Systemic change to move towards a closed loop model; redesign of systems to avoid needless and/or wasteful consumption, and actions that address the root causes of the current linear use of materials. Many of us only see the stuff in the middle of the hierarchy - like recycling and composting - but these are really less-than-best ways of doing things that deal with stuff already created. We need political leadership and a willingness to implement systems-level solutions against the wishes of lobbyists from the plastics and packaging industries in order to make real changes. Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) is urging the European Commission to include waste incineration in the EU Emissions Trading System to lower cross-industry GHG emissions. Including incinerators in the EU ETS will penalize the burning of fossil-based materials such as #plastics and synthetic textiles.
