Function and Beauty are important to the place we inhabit. 2021 AIA Iowa Impact Award Winner, Unitarian Universalist Society is a wonderful example of elegant spaces helping serve the mission of the people that use them. Deb Schoelerman of UUS says, "Persons with mobility challenges, hearing deficiencies, or other impairments are now able to participate in the activities of the UUS in ways that were not possible or convenient until we built our new building." The Lark is a bardic space manifested ‘in the light of thought’ and form. What is the purpose of an architectural space, what is its function and its form? These are critical questions when it comes to reflecting on how awards and accolades should be provided in recognition of the relative merit of a particular building and the people who have made that space happen. At a time of culture wars, where social extremists are forcefully tugging at the resilience of the fabric of community cohesion, it’s heartening to see that one building has risen to the heights of inspiration to provide a venue for people to come together in pursuit of creativity and innovation through the arts. These are pursuits that are pure of spirit, and which seek harmony above discord. This spatial ambition realises the best attributes of what the function of a wonderful building might be – that is its capacity to bring about the best in humanity. In terms of its form, The Lark, Ireland’s newest concert hall, is aesthetically astounding, with its façade reflecting the musicality of its purpose. So, The Lark embodies, in the words of Shelly’s ode, a realising of ‘the light of thought’, form, and purpose. I must admit to an element of bias in my observations here, because my brother, Michael Bracken, provided the beautifully finessed marble finish for the building. Nonetheless, I’ll unashamedly be giving it my vote for Ireland’s Favourite Building for 2024 as proposed by the the RIAI, and I’d encourage you to cast vote a for The Lark here as well! https:thelark.ie/vote/

ARCHITEKTUR MACHT SCHULE! Our September/October newsletter focuses on how school buildings are always a reflection of societal development. We need spaces that promote social skills, encourage independence, and help children and young people find orientation in a rapidly changing world. In short, educational institutions today see themselves as "spaces for teams". A well-structured spatial framework where individuals collaborate in various configurations, along with areas for retreat to foster individual concentration or relaxation. These educational buildings and their outdoor spaces are places of encounter where children and young people can grow together, develop a sense of community, unleash creativity, and practice democracy. Some of our new school buildings illustrate what this can look like in practice. Read the newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/de-Sahad Image: Kurt Hoerbst, Rudolf Steiner Schule, Vienna

How can a universal design perspective contribute to a discussion on residential accommodation and human rights? From schools to residential care facilities, buildings serve as reflections of prevailing norms and understandings. This book chapter by Anne Kathrine Frandsen and Inge Storgaard Bonfils compares the types of institutions and residential facilities that have been built for people with disabilities in the past and that are being built now. They highlight the interplay between views of humanity, social policy and architecture from the perspective of universal design. Anne Kathrine and Inge are editors of the anthology “Universal design: Cross-disciplinary perspectives in theory and practice”, which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/d5CNHzvS #UniversalDesign
