What a blast. So happy to have spent the last two days at the WEC in Ahoy. TenneT and Uniper hosted a panel today on the challenges and opportunities of the electrification of the industry. Some key takeaways: 💚Opportunities in NL include our North Sea off shore powerhouse, links to our neighboring countries and willingness from market participants. 🧐Challenges also exist: such as an uneven playing field between EU countries (eg. differences in grid fee exemptions for electrolysis) and lack of long term policies (such as translation of EU hydrogen targets for the each member state). 🌿Overall, hurdles remain to achieve targets set, and government, industry and society will need to build trust and collaborate to make the energy transition successful.

🔋 The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy is not just about tackling climate change – it’s a strategic move to increase Europe’s energy security and global competitiveness. 💡 Central and eastern Europe has a key role to play in this transition. But its importance often goes unnoticed in EU energy discussions. With the upcoming EU elections and Hungarian and Polish Council presidencies, it’s time for the European Commission to acknowledge and build on the momentum in the region. ℹ Our latest report, produced in collaboration with E3G, looks at the progress made by CEE countries over the past five years and highlights the region’s vital contribution to Europe’s energy development. Investments aimed at smartening of the electricity infrastructure are crucial if the EU are to achieve their climate and energy goals. Alongside ESMIG, smartEn Smart Energy Europe, and T&D Europe we urge Tinne Van der Straeten, the Minister for Energy of Belgium, holding the EU Council Presidency, to include a call for the development and use of smart grid indicators in the Conclusions of the Energy Council on 30 May, recognising that: 🔌 Acknowledge that smart grid indicators are an essential tool to guide investments in the efficiency, smartening and modernisation of the grid. ⚡ Encourage stakeholders to develop and consider the smart grid indicators in the preparation and deployment of grid investment plans You can read our joint letter below 👇 : Layla Sawyer | Tomás Llobet | Michael Villa | Diederik Peereboom #smartgridindicators #energygridinvestment

The golden age of municipal energy (1810-1950), and lessons for Net Zero at a local level. Britain has a new energy institution on the block, the National Energy System Operator (NESO). It marks a return to an older tradition of central planning. To counteract the risk that central plans fail when they hit local realities, the NESO has setup ‘Regional Energy Strategic planners’. In this post I will delve into the period from 1810-1930 for some lessons. A period when local level municipal energy companies flourished. A period when one of NESO’s ancestor institutions, the Central Electricity Board, executed a remarkable plan to corral a patchwork quilt of local organizations into a national ‘energy transition’. https://lnkd.in/exuzxUpa

Germany continues lead the way with the roll-out of further support for heavy industry to accelerate decarbonisation, with €2.8 billion in funding to cover the ‘cost gap’ between hydrogen and existing sources of fossil fuels. The selected hydrogen projects will use the funding to decarbonise power processes, known as “climate protection contracts”, and will be important to help end-users plan for offtake volumes and costs for a fixed period of 15 years. A second round to follow will have a budget of over €10bn. Read more in H2 View: https://loom.ly/saQ2BDY

On 2nd May 2023, Energinet, the Danish TSO started procuring volumes in the intraday market to perform countertrading on the Danish-German border. Countertrading is a method to relieve grid congestion. The flows allocated in the day-ahead auction can be quite off from the reality if for example, there are wind forecast errors on either side of the border. In this analysis performed with Silvia Messa, we saw sometimes how the German wind forecast influenced the countertrading volumes that were bought back in the intraday market in Denmark resulting in net physical flows close to zero. We have created a few slides on this topic of countertrading, which are attached here. In the future, we will also closely follow if other Nordic TSOs are open to such ideas of performing countertrading through different markets. The growing share of variable renewable energy sources can lead to larger forecast errors which might create more need for congestion management and thereby important question is where it would be procured from. #countertrading #intradaymarket #windforecast #gridcongestion #congestionmanagement
