Today's talk at the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP Global) took on some of the key myths about change. First of all, no, humans don't hate change... For anyone who has ever observed a newborn baby, this is obvious: we are born to evolve, change, reinvent. A baby does not need a bonus to start walking. We are born excellent at change - but have been educated out of it... ... as the speed of change for most of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st simply did not require my agility, resilience, and reinvention. Enter the world of perpetual turbulence - and the need to change the way we deal with change is painfully obvious: according to Gartner, only 43% of employees are willing to support enterprise change in 2022 – down from 74% in 2016. How do we do that exactly? We covered 3 key strategies in today's talk - captured so beautifully by Jessica Szewczuk, CPA, CA, CCMP. Dr. Nadya Zhexembayeva did a great job sharing 3 Perspectives to Shift from Resistance to Buy-In. The presentation to Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP Global) members was filled with tons of research and relateable personal experience. The key takeaways: 01 - We are born great at change, but get educated out of it. (No one pays babies bonuses once they learn to walk.) 02 - We are scared, not stupid. (We can only solve an emotional problem with an emotional solution like turning fear into creativity, curiosity, or fun.) 03 - We must talk with the right people. (There’s no point with the innovators and early adopters, they will anyway. There’s also no point with the laggards since they likely never will. We need to focus on the early majority. Early adopters become ambassadors for the change!)

Based on member input and our strategic planning retreat in December, we've made a lot of progress and have great plans and ideas for moving forward! Born out of the planning retreat was a vision, mission, and goals for the ENY ACS. Vision: Enriching Eastern NY by connecting scientists and chemistry to the community. Mission: Connecting, educating, and inspiring local chemists, students, and community by supporting innovative and inclusive activities and outreach. Goals: (1) Community outreach; (2) Connecting chemists; (3) Diversity, Equity, Inclusiveness, Respect (DEIR) There are many ways in which you can get involved in the ENY-ACS beyond monthly meetings, including committee memberships and volunteer opportunities. We want to hear from you about your interest in getting more involved! Selecting a committee or volunteer option does not necessarily hold you to that position - we will simply add you to our email list and reach out! Exciting News! 🍫   I am thrilled to share that Susanne Heide and I have been honored to bring the Enterprise Thinking Award home!🏆 It is so good to see that Mars takes initiative to empower our mindsets with a nice recognition program.   By understanding the roles and responsibilities in a complex cross-functional environment, we created a humble solution to collect assumptions for long-term volume planning. This initiative helped us to speak the same language between functions, brought us together and allowed us to see different point of views in relation to each other with increased visibility.    What have we learned? • Instead of assigning tasks to a group of people, finding champions for each category is the key to efficiency and ownership. • If the tasks are defined clearly, people are likely to complete them faster as they understand the value and reasoning behind them. • Progress over perfection benefits us in the long run. Cheers to the people who embrace the change and willingly collaborate to see the future a bit better. 💙

2023 was a year of inspiring mentorship programs facilitated by both Landor and WPP. To celebrate the end of the Future Leaders of Tomorrow program, WPP Singapore hosted a panel led by Supria Bali Dutta. As part of the panel, we discussed learnings for a successful mentor/mentee relationship: 1. Consistency is key - meeting regularly helps to keep momentum going 2. Prepare topics ahead of time to make the sessions more productive 3. It’s a two way street - both mentor and mentee should be taking something from each session 4. You can have different mentors to serve different needs - one mentor doesn’t need to tick all the boxes Grateful to be part of a network that champions opportunities like this.

By providing them with tailored support, education, and incentives, organizations empower these emerging leaders to make a significant impact. Mentorship programs, access to training opportunities, and collaborative initiatives serve as catalysts for their growth and development. As we invest in the next generation of maritime professionals, we pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for the industry as a whole. Let's give it up for our 2024 Horizon nominees! The Horizons was created in 2016 to recognize young professionals destined to become this City's future leaders. "The idea I had at the time was to recognize young professionals who are often overlooked because they're just starting their careers. So, to me, the Horizons is a place where we give you a high five, a pat on the back, and tell you we see you, know you're working hard, keep up the great work," said Terrance Craft, MPA, the organization's Executive Director. Terrance's idea became a vision and is now the organization's biggest event, followed by the Annual Meeting and Honors. "When you have a vision, you must communicate it repeatedly and get people to believe in it. When that happens, you'll have many people invested in your vision, and they will help you achieve it. So it's been amazing to see the Horizons grow and evolve over the past eight years. And this year's committee, led by Breanna OConnell, has been touching for me to witness because now I get to see their vision they have and how they're able to make it a reality." Thank you to everyone who joined us for today’s Engage Live meetup addressing How to Engage, Delight & Connect with Young Professionals! There were some great takeaways from our excellent panelists, Lindsey Randolph and Joshua Kozinski. Here are some of my favorite takeaways: ✅ Give Young Professionals reasons to join - what are they looking for in their careers and lives and match their needs with what your association offers - whether it’s education, mentoring, access to knowledge and the wisdom of more seasoned members. ✅ To get Young Professionals engaged, have your association leadership and staff be intentional about reaching out to them and inviting them to events, come to your annual conference, give them a buddy or mentor to show them around. Doing onboarding and overcommunicating, in the beginning, pays off and they get connected and start getting involved. ✅ Create a variety of events to engage young professionals who are introverts and those who are extroverted. ✅ Use a more casual and less formal style in speaking to them in your communications and messaging. Younger professionals have a more relaxed communication style.
