For European producers it is essential to keep competitiveness in global markets. This will enable investments and secure revenues to finance #decarbonization projects in the EU. 🇪🇺 Europe is at the forefront of climate and environmental legislation, and products manufactured in the EU have to comply with the highest environmental standards. However, this makes it more challenging for European producers when they export to non-EU countries with less environmental legislation. How can we solve this dilemma? Could the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM) include a solution for exports to prevent carbon leakage, reduce #GHG emissions and support European competitiveness? 🤔 Let's hold the microphone to our colleague and VP Nitrogen at Yara, Elena Montero to find our answers ⬇

If bunker traders and bunker providers are by definition not compliant entities under EU ETS, they have been nevertheless significantly involved in the EUA market in packaging the financially regulated product together the physical delivery of bunker stems. Their role will even get more important under FuelEU as biofuels, biofuels mixing, bio LNG and other alternative fuels will clearly be the most efficient way forward to reduce shipowners’ exposure under this additional piece of carbon related regulation. Very much looking forward to our exchanges and discussions during this session. #ETS #FUELEU #EMISSIONS #CO2 #CARBON

🏗 Why was the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) introduced, and how does it help prevent carbon leakage? The CBAM is designed to address carbon leakage by pricing emissions from carbon-intensive imports like cement, steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity, and hydrogen. By doing so, it encourages both EU and non-EU industries to adopt cleaner production processes and aligns with the EU's ambitious decarbonisation goals. 🏭 CBAM began its transition phase in October 2023 and will be fully operational by January 2026, impacting global industries and aligning them with the EU’s decarbonization goals. 👨🏫 Explore the global impact and challenges of CBAM in this insightful lecture by Stefan Weishaar’s lecture recording. Fenech & Fenech invited to speak at the 'We are all connected in Shipping' Conference organised by WISTA International. Daniel-Luc Farrugia, Associate within the Marine Litigation Department, was invited to contribute to a panel discussion on the EU Emission Trading System hosted by WISTA Turkiye on April 19th in Istanbul. During the discussion, Daniel-Luc shared his views on the new challenges faced by the shipping industry as compliance with EU ETS transitions from preparation to implementation. He explained that the primary complexity lies in identifying which entity should be considered the 'shipping company' and, once identified, determining which administering authority it should be attributed to. Daniel-Luc was joined on the panel by Andreas Chrysostomou, Maria Theodoridou, Morgane Querel, Ali Ibrahim Kontaytekin, Katalin Dobránszky-Bartus, PhD and cihan ergenc. For any queries related to decarbonisation, specifically the EU ETS, please reach out to Ann Fenech or Daniel-Luc Farrugia by email on ann.fenech@fenechlaw.com or daniel.farrugia@fenechlaw.com #Shipping #EUETS #Decarbonisation WISTA International
