The US-China rivalry in Pacific Island nations reflects a strategic contest for influence and economic dominance. China's Belt and Road Initiative has spurred significant engagement, raising concerns in the US about Beijing's growing sway. The Pacific becomes a geopolitical battleground as both powers vie for diplomatic, economic, and military leverage, leaving island nations navigating a delicate balance between the two giants. "What I try to instill in my students is to think globally and act locally. Maybe you can’t bring peace to the Middle East, but what can you do here in the South Fayette community that can have an impact," USIP Peace Teacher Felix Yerace tells The Almanac. https://lnkd.in/e6PXdTY9 Learn more about our Peace Teachers program on this #WorldTeachersDay: https://lnkd.in/gN3s7sU3

Associate Professor, Director and Advisor with a passion for writing, nature, sports, diplomacy and impact.
Fascinating conversation with Daniel Millis on the INSANE power of rugby to realise foreign policy goals, change societies, and win hearts, minds and souls....while building informal-to-formal diplomatic relationships....and producing scintillating on field rugby. #sportsdiplomacy is such an obvious yet challenging field. 'We are worried about losing the Pacific to China!' (ok, so, we must play to our unique comparative advantages - sport, faith and culture). 'But confusion reigns!' - so create a new strategy or specific action plans for individual sports. 'And should we be co-opting sports for FP gains?' no brainer. If we don't, others will. Plus, be proud of our impact, work and authenticity in this area (who else does this stuff???? seriously.) Last but not least, what about hearing, researching and learning about, say, how Tonga, Fiji or others PINs do #rugbydiolomacy? Game on. The genie is out the bottle. mayaswell make, celebrate and measure, some wishes. DFAT Caitlin Byrne Professor Sarah Kelly OAM Simon Szewach Gavin Price #DITSD

#Olympics2024 isn't just about athletic prowess. It's a global stage where nations come together (and sometimes clash) in a unique display of soft power and diplomacy. As an act of pure soft diplomacy, we witnessed during the opening ceremony, the way #France tried to shape itself as a global powerhouse. But the honor of being the hosting city and country for the Olympics often has a very high price tag, the clear example being the Athens 2004 Olympics and how it steered future events for the economy of #Greece. In this valuable piece by CNBC, we could see how #Olympics2024 Olympics has actually succeeded in lowering the price tag. #Geopolitics #SportsDiplomacy https://lnkd.in/diHMW_Hp
