The first Partner Symposium for the Network for Engineering With Nature (N-EWN) took place last month in St. Augustine, Florida. This event, which brought together various partners to discuss Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and the shift towards more sustainable approaches, was a testament to our collective commitment. NBS aims to improve the resilience of our communities, environment, and economy through collaboration across disciplines and boundaries, with the goal of using natural systems to enhance resilience across all aspects of our society.   We have a wealth of expertise in science, planning, engineering, economics, and other fields, ready to partner up and make this happen. Bringing together our leaders within AECOM for the NBS initiative is not only exciting but also essential. We recognize that we have a long journey ahead, but initiatives like N-EWN give us hope that we can achieve these goals together. To rapidly transform our infrastructure systems to meet climate targets, we must accelerate the transfer of cutting-edge research from academia into industry. I'm excited to be part of this process in my new joint appointment, alongside my role at Arup, as the 𝐀𝐫𝐮𝐩 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞, 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞! 🎓   Here's what's on my agenda: 1. Advancing energy modelling through development of the open-source Calliope energy system modelling framework (learn more: https://www.callio.pe/). I'll be focussing on embedding resilience and engaging stakeholders in the modelling process. 2. Finding new ways to connect transport and energy models to drive whole-system solutions to infrastructure development (check out my recent article on the topic: https://lnkd.in/e9wkZhXD). 3. Equipping the next generation of Energy leaders with the skills to incorporate energy system modelling in decision-making, as a lecturer on the Energy Technologies MPhil programme (https://lnkd.in/e9FfVC-7).

Creating a circular economy is imperative for the built environment. Arup materials experts have for many years been committed to exploring materials that reduce the carbon costs of building projects and structures, through their reuse, recycling and research and innovation.  In a new short video, I show how glass from a demolished double-glazed unit can be recovered, cleaned up, and reused in a relatively simple but highly effective way. The production engineering skill set has always been about putting things together cheaply and efficiently. Now, production engineering must expand rapidly into taking things apart, so that the materials from buildings can be given a new life and we achieve a circular economy. Our choice of materials determines the lifespan of an asset and the ability to reuse or recycle its parts. At Arup, we think about how things are made, what they are made from, and then what happens to those materials, to ultimately help us choose the right materials for sustainable development.   You can watch the full video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/e458kKRt. Future Cleantech Architects Featured in FORESIGHT Climate & Energy's The Jolt Podcast on Decarbonizing High-Temperature Heat As a preview of our newly released technical report, our Cleantech Analyst Antoine Koen was interviewed by Kira Taylor for last week’s edition of The Jolt podcast on decarbonizing high-temperature heat in industry.   In most cases, the best solution will be direct electrification, despite significant economic challenges due to high energy costs, as it is the only truly future-proof option. Making it feasible requires lowering electricity costs, among other measures.   Expanding grid capacity and coverage increases electricity supply locally, reducing costs and enabling currently insufficiently connected plants to electrify (especially SMEs). Solar and wind power generation are cheap if their intermittency can be addressed at low cost, which is uniquely feasible for HT applications with thermal storage in the short to medium term. Thermal storage can be much cheaper than batteries. Still, it is crucial to strongly and continuously support renewable expansion by a combination of other storage technologies and the development of dispatchable clean power (e.g. advanced geothermal).   In addition to electrification, there are multiple potential options to directly generate clean heat further down the line, especially at low and medium temperatures. These options include concentrated solar or geothermal, and could have advantages over electric heat in the future, in particular if grid access remains a severe bottleneck for direct electrification.   Our new technical report comprehensively compares the different technology pathways available for decarbonizing high-temperature heat processes in industry. The analysis answers key questions, including which pathways are most promising, which limitations exist today, and which systemic changes – both inside and outside industrial plants – are required for a techno-economically successful transition to clean high-temperature heat in industry.
