I am thrilled to share that I will be taking part in The Speed Project (TSP) LALV in March 2024. 🎉🙌🏾 💥You know that I am always up for an adventure and being placed in spaces to learn. 🏃🏾♀️I am super delighted to embark in this venture with five other PHENOMENAL women who also relish doing this type of challenge and made it through the application process (celebration hands up emoji). As a result we have come together for this endurance race and created a sisterhood called LDN Sole Sisters. 📣What is TSP? A bit of background, TSP is a 340 mile race (if you’re lucky and don’t get lost) from Santa Monica Boulevard, LA to Las Vegas running across the desert for 2 days. 📣Who are LDN Sole Sisters? We are a group of 6 FABULOUS women ranging between the ages of 40 and 50 and we all enjoy making our bodies move! We want to show and celebrate that being active and adventurous doesn’t stop just because you reach a at a certain age. 📣Why are we doing it? We all have our own unique personal reasons for wanting to do this madness. Ultimately, We want to be the change we want to see! There aren’t too many folks that look, and sound like our team in these spaces. We know the systemic challenges faced by Black women in this space, which are rooted in historical disparities and societal prejudices. These challenges include limited representation, unequal access to resources and opportunities, as well as stereotypes that may hinder participation. We want to challenge and change this - collectively that is our mission. 📣 How it’s going? The training plans have begun in earnest, and I am under no illusion as to how hard this is going to be! This will demand a lot from my body, mind, and soul! Plus juggling life with epic training commitments, BUT as a crew we’ve got our sights firmly fixed on our goal = 340 miles, 6 Women, 2 Days 😅 📣 So, what happens once we’ve done it? Sure, that is great and good for us but what does that mean? Does it change anything? Well, there’s certainly a lot to be said for being “seen” as a way of inspiring others, but we plan to make it a reality for another team from an underrepresented group. We’ll assist them in their quest to take part in the next race / challenge in the following year. With the support of key partners like Official Black Wall Street, Akina stands out as not just a platform but a movement aimed at fostering sisterhood and providing the tools for Black female entrepreneurs, professionals, mothers, and more to thrive. Leigh Higginbotham Butler, the CEO and founder of Akina, expressed her motivation, stating, “The algorithms of existing networks and online communities weren’t serving women like me. As a Black mom and entrepreneur, navigating the challenges of motherhood and business can be daunting, but the rewards are immeasurable. Did you know that Black women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S., yet they receive less than 1% of venture capital funding? Despite these odds, we continue to push forward, creating opportunities and breaking barriers. Balancing these roles requires resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to our families and communities. It’s time we change the narrative and support Black women in business, ensuring that our voices are heard and our contributions recognized. Did you know about Marian Croak? Did you know she was born on May 14, 1955 in New York City? Did you know she is one the first black women in the United States to be inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame for her development of over 200 patents to date? Did you know that being inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame is among the highest honors for inventors, and includes members such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and the Wright brothers? Did you know that Of the Hall of Fame's 610 inductees, just 48 of them are women and only 30 are Black? Of the 30 that are black, only one other member is a black woman besides Ms. Croak: Patricia Bath, an ophthalmologist who created a device used during surgery to easily remove cataracts. So out of the halls over 600 inductees, only two are black women. This makes her membership rarer than the late great Kobe Bryant passing the ball in the mid 2000s Did you know that of the more than 200 patents to her name, Croak most notably developed Voice over Internet Protocol, which converts voice data into digital signals that can be transmitted over the internet, rather than through phone lines like in the early days of the internet. This technology that has innumerable and important uses in our everyday lives but did you know critics initially called it an impractical toy? Did you know it makes things like zoom and other remote work possible? That it allows for the text voting for American Idol? and even made Hurricane Katrina donations possible. So without her, we couldn’t FaceTime, work from home, vote for Ruben studdard or Clay Aiken, or start go fund mes Did you know she led a team that brought broadband to developing countries in Asia and Africa, building, for example, public wi-fi in railroad stations in India? Did you know she also works on racial justice efforts at Google, and continues to mentor women and young girls in engineering to this day? Well, now you do.
