Science indicates that the next decade is crucial for addressing climate breakdown, demanding a profound shift in our mindset to drive the necessary changes within this alarmingly tight timeframe. Nature offers ready-made solutions to our changing climate, if we choose to embrace them. Healthy native woodlands, peatlands, saltmarshes, and seagrass meadows have an incredible capacity to absorb CO2. When these ecosystems function properly, they also help mitigate the effects of flooding, drought, and wildfires. Rewilding plays a crucial role in combating climate change by restoring ecosystem health and sequestering carbon. Nature is more than just a collection of species; it’s a complex network of processes and interactions that sustain ecosystems: predation, scavenging, birth, death, decay, and regeneration. On this #worldenvironmentday, we recommit ourselves to the task of nurturing the environment so that it can nurture and protect us in return. Here are some striking facts that amplify the call to action for each one of us. ❗ Every 5 seconds, the equivalent of one football pitch of soil is eroded. Yet, it takes 1,000 years to generate 3 centimetres of topsoil. ❗ Many deserts are expanding because of climate change but some countries are fighting back including the 22 countries in Africa that border the Sahara Desert where the Great Green Wall initiative aims to restore 100 million hectares of land through a mosaic of green and productive landscapes.  ❗ Only 0.5% of water on Earth is useable and available freshwater. Too often, we look at land-use impacts in isolation. For example, we might consider the impact of water diversions in one part of a watershed without considering wetland drainage in another when it comes to considering how water flows might be affected. And far too often, we do not factor in the longer-term impacts of climate change, such as changing precipitation patterns or higher winter temperatures. WCS Canada’s Northern Boreal Mountains Cumulative Effects Program is trying to address this gap by developing a better understanding of the cumulative effects of human disturbance and climate change stressors on wildlife and important habitats. This work can inform conservation targets and help ensure they are built around scientifically sound ecological thresholds for sustaining healthy wildlife populations and ecosystems. As part of the program, WCS Canada has initiated a new study that looks at the cumulative impact of surface disturbance and climate change stressors on water quality in the Indian and Klondike River drainages. We have presented this research to Government partners as an example of how linear density (number of roads, power lines or pipelines), surface disturbance (mining, development) and climate stressors can be linked to water-quality indicators, such as total suspended sediments in salmon spawning streams. We are also investigating the cumulative effect of multiple stressors on the density, diversity, and community composition of terrestrial land birds across various levels of resource and climate stressors in collaboration with Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment Yukon, Tr’ondek Hwech’in First Nation and the First Nation of Na-cho Nyäk Dun. It does surprise me that some people (including people on this forum) deny there is a climate change issue, or that it's man-made. Most of those seem to have a certain inclination, or a vested interest. But while we can all discuss how we feel about changes in weather (I've never known so much flooding or number of storms in my area), but this article talks about the impact climate is having on nature.
