Pennsylvania's governor has committed to achieving 30% renewable energy by 2030, with a recent report by business groups highlighting the potential for over $13.1 billion in investments and 129,000 new jobs in the next seven years. A coalition of approximately 100 clean energy groups is urging swift action to expand renewable energy requirements within the state's Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards (AEPS). The report, conducted by Advanced Energy United, MAREC Action, and American Clean Power Association, underscores the economic benefits of clean energy for Pennsylvania, emphasizing the state's need to catch up with neighboring states in terms of policy. 💡Part two of our dive into the REGO scheme following our policy summary paper with Climate Group last month (https://lnkd.in/ek7e8mwG). 🔎 This time we take a deeper, technical look into some of the concerns and questions which have been raised, with the brilliant team at Cornwall Insight reviewing the evidence and data to flesh out insights shared in this latest report.
Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) are designed to provide transparency by certifying the origin of renewable energy & helping track its credentials from generation to user. But as the application of REGOs extends beyond the original design, we ask what more may be needed to support decarbonisation? Cornwall Insight’s new report, commissioned by BT Group, 'Reviewing the Future of REGOs for Corporate' explores four critical questions to answer what the future holds for REGOs: ➡ What role do REGOs play in the GB electricity sector? ➡ Do REGOs encourage the development of new renewable energy projects? ➡ How does end-user participation in the REGO market affect the renewable energy transition? ➡ What viable alternatives to REGOs exist? Discover the full insights by downloading the report here: https://lnkd.in/evwwjxuU

We are increasingly discussing REGOs with a range of energy market participants, reflecting rising concerns about environmental benefits and comparability of decarbonisation claims. While the REGO scheme is intended to provide transparency over the origin of the units of electricity produced from renewable generation, and to track the transfer of renewable credentials of electricity from a generator to a user, its evolved application does not consistently meet the expectations of consumers in today’s market. Our latest report, Reviewing the Future of REGOs for Corporates, produced with BT Group, finds that: ➡️ REGO trading lacks transparency on prices, volumes of trades and availability of certificates ➡️ REGOs form a small part of the revenue stack for renewable generation ➡️ REGO trading in unregulated, and prices are typically to volatile to support investment in new build assets ➡️ Under full power system decarbonisation, REGOs in their current format are unlikely to prove useful in evidencing renewable supply, (although there could continue to be some differentiation between low-carbon and renewable supply ➡️ Reform or evolution of the REGO scheme may provide a greater opportunity for corporates to support the delivery of a smarter and more flexible energy system To read the full Cornwall Insight report, click the link below: https://lnkd.in/eh_KrWSC
