1 Undershaft is set to become a giant in London’s skyline, towering at 304m. But here’s the question...... Can a building this big lead the way in sustainability? Eric Parry’s design promises more than just height. It’s about innovation. The skyscraper will feature energy efficient systems and aim to minimise embodied carbon during construction. Public spaces like the viewing gallery and square will make it more than just another office block, it’ll be a place for everyone. But will we see real innovation used? I’m hoping to see all the sustainable, cutting edge products going into this building to help reduce carbon, materials, systems, and design features that truly push boundaries. And let’s hope budgets don’t see sustainability get value engineered out. This isn’t just about another tall building. It’s about reshaping what a sustainable future looks like in the heart of London. If done right, 1 Undershaft could set the standard for green skyscrapers, proving that size doesn’t have to come at the expense of sustainability. #SustainableSkyscraper #1Undershaft #NetZeroLondon #GreenArchitecture #EricParry #CityOfLondon

Here are some reflections we've cultivated over time on highrise buildings, aimed at enhancing the human experience. Take a moment to have a read.
We perceive highrise buildings as functioning on two distinct scales. One scale pertains to the human perspective, while the other involves its towering stature within the city skyline. Often, the human scale is neglected, lacking proper articulation. We advocate for a pronounced articulation of the building's base, as it fosters a more compassionate human environment. Our observation is that office buildings often privatize surrounding spaces. This led us to ponder: How can we cultivate a more inclusive, communal tower that shares its amenities openly? One that is generous to both its neighbors and occupants. Hence, we've conceived a dual-purpose structure: a public edifice intertwined with an office space. Together, they give rise to a novel hybrid, dubbed City First. The southern facade of the building is meticulously planned as an active photovoltaic surface right from the outset, rather than being an afterthought. This integration seamlessly combines electricity generation, shading, and architectural expression into a unified design. Competition proposal for #HBreavis for their central Berlin site. #highrise #tallbuildings #photovoltaic

In the new year, the growing trend that I’ve been following for some time is adaptive reuse. This involves taking old, unused buildings and repurposing them into modern living or commercial spaces. It’s a creative opportunity to breathe new life into forgotten structures. We recently worked on converting an old warehouse into a vibrant mixed-use development that now houses both residential units and retail spaces. The industrial charm of the original structure, combined with modern interiors, created a unique blend of the old and new. Adaptive reuse not only preserves the character of a city but also offers environmental benefits by reducing demolition waste and preserving resources. Looking forward, I see adaptive reuse as one of the most exciting and sustainable ways to reshape our cities. This approach is perfect for developers who want to balance innovation with sustainability, and I believe it will only grow in popularity in the coming years. #AdaptiveReuse #SustainableDesign #UrbanRevitalization #InnovativeArchitecture #PreserveAndProgress #ModernLiving #SustainableDevelopment

The building's form has evolved from a simple block to a dynamic, energy-efficient structure deeply integrated with its surroundings. Initially conceived with a focus on natural ventilation and light, the addition of a central courtyard enhanced both passive cooling and community interaction. As the design progressed, this courtyard concept expanded towards each end, dividing the building into wings to optimize functionality and spatial efficiency. Integration with an interactive walkway further blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting the public to engage with the building as a vibrant community hub. Throughout its evolution, the design remains rooted in principles of sustainability, promoting physical well-being, and fostering a sense of belonging within the urban landscape. How has the evolution of technology impacted the form and function of buildings? #sustainablearchitecture #communityengagement #energyefficiency #naturalventilation #courtyarddesign #urbanintegration #buildingevolution #communityhub

Skyscrapers aren't just buildings. They're symbols. 432 Park Avenue isn't merely a structure soaring into the sky; it's a testament to ambition, precision, and the complexities of modern engineering. Nestled in the heart of New York City, this residential tower redefines luxury and challenges the very notion of living spaces in the sky. At 1,396 feet tall, it stands as one of the tallest residential buildings in the Western Hemisphere. But it's not just its height that captivates; it's the design. With a 1:15 width-to-height ratio, it's a marvel of engineering, offering stability against the forces of nature while providing breathtaking views of the city. The tower’s design, characterized by its unique 10 x 10-foot windows, offers a glimpse into the future of urban living. These windows aren't just architectural features; they're frames to the living art of the city below, constantly changing, always dynamic. But 432 Park Avenue also opens a dialogue on the sustainability and social implications of such megastructures. It raises questions about urban landscapes, the allocation of space, and the future of city living. As we marvel at the human capacity to build towards the clouds, we must also ponder what these structures say about us, our values, and the future we envision for our cities. Let's discuss: What impact do monumental structures like 432 Park Avenue have on the fabric of urban life and on our perceptions of space and luxury? Engage below with your thoughts and insights.

Melbourne's City Square isn't just getting a facelift — it's being redefined. Part of the Metro Tunnel Project, our design for this revitalised, dynamic public space promises to reorientate the city's centre with a blend of culture, history and contemporary design. Anchored by the new Town Hall Station, the Square will feature a shaded canopy entrance to the Station, pictured. This entrance will allow daylight into the expansive concourse below and enable a visual connection between the above-ground public Square and its underground companion. Acting as a new city entry, Town Hall Station will blend grand open spaces with striking built structures, including Town Hall Place, a new A-grade 10-storey commercial building currently in development above the Station. Together, these three new and renewed landmarks will transform this part of the city into a single civic and cultural pedestrian precinct. "The design for City Square draws together cultural and civic landmarks in a welcoming pedestrian precinct," says Principal and Head of Design Mark Loughnan. "Conceptualised as an immersive clearing in the city fabric, the Square will be refreshed with new vitality to maintain its role as one of the main public gathering and events spaces in the city's heart." The design for the Metro Tunnel is a collaboration between leading design practices Hassell,WW+P Architects and RSHP.
