Happy 5th Birthday to Musée du Louvre Conservation Centre! This week marks five years since the building’s inauguration was celebrated with special guests and press in Liévin, northern France. During his speech at the inauguration back in Oct 2019, #GrahamStirk, Senior Director, RSHP, said that:  “It has been a great honour to be part of this incredible endeavour. Very few clients are as prestigious as the Louvre and even fewer briefs carry more weight than the relocation of one of humanity’s great treasures. The use of simple, elegant forms, marked by a solidity that resonates with the brief to create a powerful language of great French fortresses, that in this case retrain a large inclined park which protects the works of art below.” Looking back on his time working on the project, John McElgunn, Senior Director, RSHP remembers:  “The Louvre was a great design adventure. Technically very demanding and working to an extremely tight budget, our strikingly simple design solution created a series of repetitive arches rising out of the ground. The power of the architecture comes from the buildings scale and clarity. We extended the adjacent park and allowed it to flow over the roof creating a landscape building that sits in the site rather than on the site.”

This week we hosted the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) Circular Surgery Workshop, where Michelle Sánchez Brajkovic, Sustainability Lead, RSHP, chaired insightful discussions on data ownership and warranties in the circular economy. It was a pleasure to welcome industry leaders gathered to explore how we can work together to make circularity a reality. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #RSHP #ACAN #CircularSurgery #IndustryLeaders #FutureOfConstruction

It is always a joy to have a special visit to the Lloyd's of London building and on this occasion we were in the good company of Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) guests for an architecture tour guided by RSHP Associate Partner, Maurice Brennan, as part of the CTBUH International Conference. It was wonderful to see the reaction of the group as they saw the incredible underwriting atrium space ‘The Room', in real life for the first time, after admiring the design in architecture books and design documentaries for so many years.   A huge thanks to Darren Cox CIWFM for hosting our guests and offering such a brilliant insight into the operation of the building. Here are some architectural snaps from the underwriting space ‘The Room’ for you to enjoy! John McElgunn features in KONE’s latest article, “New or renew? The challenge of shaping the future of cities,” discussing the adaptive reuse of Carlton House Terrace in St James’s, London, from an existing 1970s office building and car park into a high-quality commercial development with a vibrant social hub. (https://lnkd.in/gDVzDEfs) “We opened up the building, created a new panoramic elevator core with an atrium bringing light all the way to the basement. The existing structural frame was retained, and the reconstituted stone from the façade was reused. We worked closely with KONE to install a new central elevator core.” John McElgunn   RSHP and KONE have collaborated on a variety of projects over the years, including the much-loved panoramic lifts at the Leadenhall Building. Carlton House Terrace is currently under construction, discover a range of drawings, site images, and design renders on our website: https://lnkd.in/gUvZffiU #RSHP #KONE #Adaptivereuse

The Emory hotel offers lessons in leanness from collaborating engineers, to avoid unnecessary structure or enclosed spaces, so expending less carbon, says RSHP’s Ivan Harbour. Ivan's opinion piece published this week in RIBA Journal delves into The Emory's design strategy of integrating engineering solutions alongside space planning (https://lnkd.in/ehZctyqh), Learn about the hotel’s unconventional structure and how it balances load paths to ground in a building with no conventional load-bearing core, while oversailing adjacent subterranean spaces.  Structural Engineers: WSP,Expedition Engineering Ltd Discover more about the project and full team on our website: https://lnkd.in/dEbbKVSd
