AdvisorHub recently released its annual "Advisors To Watch" for 2024 Talking with several advisors from the lists has provided us with some unique insight into what these advisors are specifically doing to reach, and then surpass the $1,000,000,000 mark. The list includes 250 top advisors under $1 Billion and 150 advisors managing over $1Bil AUM. Common themes to reach $1 Billion - Fully Leverage the resources of the firm they are at to support their Clients - They learn/are mentored by advisors who have already done it - Ample client service support so they can focus on client-facing tasks - Highly efficient investment/portfolio management process - Strong organic growth engine - Junior Advisor who can handle smaller accounts Takeaways from Advisors who surpass $1 Billion - Find the best possible platform or firm to support their specific client needs and position their business for an eventual monetization/liquidity event - Some still spend the majority of their time meeting with clients, but most have reduced the time spent on this to focus on other aspects of the business - They invest heavily in the business and know how to delegate - Not only are they growing organically, but inorganically as well (M&A) Ultimately, they aren't tripping over dollars to pick up pennies and they don't view what they do every day as a job - they view it as a business. They focus on the bigger picture and understand the importance of having great systems and processes in place to reach their long-term growth goals. 6 lessons learned since joining Live Oak 6 months ago. 1. Taking CHANCES is where growth begin • Leaving svb after 14 years was not easy even with the events of Mar’23- it was home, it was safe, it was the market leader, it’s where I learned finance and capital stratigies, it was a career change for me 2 months before I got married, it was where I fell in love with entrepreneurship - leaving all of that was a big CHANCE- not risk or choice but CHANCE as defined is a possibility of something happening….this led to…. 2. New relationships lead to new possibilities • Once I took a chance on joining Live Oak, new relationships were formed instantly - these inspired me, challenged me, changed my perspective and opened me to new ideas 3. A New logo doesn’t mean cutoff old colleagues/ “friends” • New opportunities and responsibilities can fill your calendar quickly - I’ve learned to never lose the desire and need to stay connected to old/ valuable connections with friends and ex-colleagues - this has been invaluable in my perspective of where I was and where I am today and keeps me centered on certain people who have been very influential in my professional growth 4. Building is far better (for me) than ladder climbing • Joining svb in 2010 when it was a 1,000 person organization was exciting and inspiring since everyone had 3-4 jobs to create and work on projects you were passionate about - experiencing that again after 14 years woke me up like smelling salt- working with entrepreneurs and founders you quickly realize this is the sweet spot for many that are addicted to building and exit when things plateau or get too big to change 5. Culture is king • Loving where you work is okay, but loving who you work with is everything - few times in my career I’ve been completely aligned with everyone on my immediate team and believed in the overall organizational goals - this is happening real-time! 6. Winning new deals is motivating, forming long-term partnerships is everything! • In the venture debt world, you can win on terms, management connections or investor support, but no matter how you get a signed term sheet, how you backup your offer/ promise is what changes the game - I/ we are committed to being there in good times and bad ***disclaimer this is my perspective/ experience and others will and can grow by staying in an organization or industry with self- reflection or taking on new challenges, but I’ve never looked back or thought twice about the CHANCE I took 6 months ago! Six months at Gestalt Capital (Six months and a few weeks, I’m a little late): A few weeks ago, I marked my six month anniversary at Gestalt Capital. It’s given me the opportunity to reflect about what I’ve seen working here since then, especially around the three buckets of business owners that we come across regularly. Bucket 1: They want to succeed and have kids in the business - easy. Transfer to the kids, let them buy you out. Bucket 2: They want to succeed and are happy to walk away post-sale: medium. Find a private equity group (the market is a bit tougher than 2022, but still doable) and cash out. Bucket 3: They want to succeed, don’t have family to take over, and also don’t want to walk away - worried about their people, clients, suppliers, culture (their legacy). HARD. PE doesn’t want this. It’s the Bucket 3 owners that I love meeting, because I understand their frustration. Having watched my mother spend her life building a business (shameless plug: The Cupcake Shoppe, www.thecupcakeshoppe.ca), I’ve seen what it’s like to care about your business beyond the dollar value. That’s what has made the last six months really interesting for me - the ability to work with the kind of business owners that are passionate about their businesses and care about their legacy. #smbs #founders #owners

🌟 Reflecting on a Resilient 2023 and Inviting Connections for 2024! 🚀 As we bid farewell to 2023, I'm proud to share the journey of success at Woodbridge International amid challenging market conditions. 📈 Despite a tough lending environment and restricted deployment by private equity, our dedicated team pulled together to close 23 deals. The true testament to our collective effort was evident in the firm's achievement of a strong finish to the year, culminating in an impressive 12 deals in Q4. This was the result of executing on a lot of tough lessons learnt throughout the year, with each deal closing marking a step forward, while equally each failure marking the opportunity to improve. Patrick Laliberte, MBA and I as a deal team contributed 8 of the 23 closings in 2023. The 8th one held special significance as it celebrated a personal milestone of closing 20 deals over a 3-year period at Woodbridge International. My journey has spanned across an array of industries, from distribution, construction, retail, manufacturing, software development, medical, managed IT services, renewable energy to a name a few. The total market cap of these 20 deals reached a remarkable $278M (~R5.2B), underscoring the impact and value the firm has brought to the table for our clients. Excitement is in the air as we settle into in 2024! With favorable conditions suggesting a steadying of inflation and a decline in interest rates, the environment is poised for widespread company rebounds and a surge in capital deployment. 💰 Beyond the numbers, one of my personal goals for 2024 is to connect with peers in the M&A space – whether you're in private equity, commercial lending, law, or simply share a keen interest in the field, let's connect! Next week is the ADFinanceWeek (ADFW). As thousands of people land in the Falcon economy, a few eagled-eyed ones will be looking for UFOs. I am not talking about flying saucers but the Unidentified Family Offices 😎 . If there is any mystique left in the world of money, family offices still have it. Many of those discrete family-run businesses still prefer to operate under the radar. That is why Family Offices (FOs) are alien to most. We were plugged into FOs by chance when a few found us via LI (yes, it happens). They wanted us to conduct commercial due diligence for their portfolio and provide “second expert opinion” (#healthcare business dynamics require a special lens). What have we learned? 🔵 THE DOWN-TO-EARTH INVESTOR The FO crowd is as diverse as the real economy. Yet, they share quite a few commonalities: ◾ A few FOs are going through generational shifts and a few are interested in new sectors such as #technology, #biotechnology, and #healthtech. They are in learning mode. ◾ Most are looking to optimize, rebalance, and diversify their portfolios. While some will cut overexposure to risky assets, others will have an appetite for new technology areas (de-risk vs FOMO). ◾ The focus is on smart asset allocation aligned to their FO mandate and about situational awareness (the market, including the investment one, is changing). ◾Finally, it is not only about preserving wealth but also about making money too. Some FOs are struggling with liquidity.  What is the word we hear most often?   De-risk. De-risk. De-risk. 🔵THE DE-RISK GAME When you de-risk your thesis, so you stack up your odds to make money. (pure venture behaves differently, but most follow this pattern). Investing in Health Tech and Biotech carries two risks: IP and Market viability.  ❓ IP-Does the product do what it says on the tin? Can you prove it? Is it compliant? ❓Market Viability- Does the market need this solution?  Will the solution sell and become a sound business? 🔵COMMERCIAL DUE DILIGENCE While most VCs dedicate a lot of their time to the above (product viability), the second part (commercial viability) is generally overlooked. And yet, out of 1000’s of companies out there: How can you differentiate the "real deal" from the "copy"?  Which companies are truly investible from a #business viability way? Because many FOs are new to #digitalhealth, they can be more diligent than some #vcs when conducting commercial due diligence. Why? They do not fall on the bias "tech sells by itself" and involve experts with a track record. After all, FOs want to invest in real businesses. A real #business must be commercially viable.
