Please sign my petition & why it matters. https://lnkd.in/gwUkBMe9 Two years ago, I stood before my soccer club Board, my heart heavy with grief. I had lost two people dear to me - a close friend and teammate, as well as a fellow goalkeeper. Both tragically took their own lives. As we approach May - Mental Health Month - it is time to revisit the importance of supporting our youth athletes' mental health. Our young athletes face immense pressures on and off the field. The stress of competition can be overwhelming, leading to serious mental health issues if not properly addressed. In fact, studies show that youth athletes are more likely to experience anxiety and depression than non-athletes (Source: Journal of Athletic Training). I propose two game-changing solutions: 1) A sports bag tag for all athletes with a QR code linking directly to our club's resource page. This page would provide access to mental health support hotlines and resources specifically tailored for U13 players and older. 2) Approval of the Female Footballers Mental Skills workshop within our club curriculum. These initiatives will not only provide immediate assistance but also promote an ongoing conversation about mental health among our young athletes in Davis, CA. We owe it to them – let's ensure they have access to the support they need when they need it most. Please sign this petition urging our soccer club management team to implement these critical resources immediately. Female Footballers

Recent studies highlight the significant mental health challenges faced by women in sports. For example, data from the American College of Sports Medicine indicates that approximately 30% of female student-athletes report experiencing anxiety, with only a small fraction seeking professional care. The prevalence of mental health issues such as disordered eating, burnout, depression, and anxiety affects about 35% of elite athletes, with these challenges exacerbated by the high-pressure environment of professional and collegiate sports (ACSM_CMS). Furthermore, the wider student population, including student-athletes, has a substantial incidence of mental health conditions, with about 33% experiencing significant symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Among those, only 10% of student-athletes with known mental health issues seek help, underscoring the substantial gap in mental health support within this group (Athletes for Hope). These statistics emphasize the need for greater mental health support and resources in the sporting world, particularly for women who may face additional pressures related to gender bias and societal expectations. Supporting mental health in sports isn't just about treating issues as they arise but also involves preventative measures, education, and creating an environment where athletes feel safe and supported to seek help. The use of tools like the Melp app can be instrumental in providing accessible and tailored mental health support to meet these challenges head-on. Mental Health After Life in Sports For many college athletes, transitioning from their competitive sports years to “regular life” can be extremely challenging. This shift often leads to mental health struggles, particularly during the sport’s season when watching from the sidelines rather than participating can intensify feelings of loss and frustration. The transition from the athlete lifestyle can be a deep and dark period for many former athletes. Staying Involved with Sports One effective way to ease this transition is by staying involved in your sport in a different capacity. Consider roles such as coaching, volunteering, or joining a community league. These avenues can help maintain a connection to the sport and keep your competitive spirit alive. Finding Support The struggle is real, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Lean on the support of friends, family, and former teammates. Engaging with others who understand your experience can provide comfort and encouragement as you navigate this new chapter. Conclusion Transitioning from the life of a college athlete to regular life is challenging, but with the right support and continued involvement in sports, it is possible to find a new sense of purpose and fulfillment. Remember, it’s important to seek help and stay connected with your passions.
