TLDR: There are lessons to be learned by high tech from the theatre world, especially when it comes to facing many of the same challenges - recognizing different voices and developing the next generation. *** As someone who has been an enthusiastic participant in theatre for decades in various capacities - audience member, actor, director, booster, board member - this article calls to centerstage and spotlights definite challenges around participation, representation, and perspectives that other industries should consider as well. In fact, as I read it, I was struck how many aspects of the situation it describes are the same ones I have heard repeatedly across industries like high tech and finance and across functions like cybersecurity and software engineering. And while strides have been made in most areas through intentional, dedicated efforts by leaders, organizations, and individuals that respect - and expect - the idea of broader talent pools and different voices, all you have to do is look at the reawakened - and to my mind, artificial and weaponized - debate about DEI to see the work to be done is seemingly evergreen. [My take: There is no debate. DEI programs - or whatever you want to call them - work. I've seen first-hand their implementation and evolution over the years, and they truly do improve the quality of a work environment. They make companies better, they make workforces stronger, and their presence is a literal force-multiplier.
