I recently had the privilege of attending an enlightening Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Conference organized by Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP) and the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC). The conference covered diverse topics, including Drug Discovery with a focus on New Targets and New Chemistry, Preclinical Antimicrobial Development, and insightful Panel Discussions. One such panel explored the effectiveness of the WHO Priority Pathogen lists in identifying targets for Antimicrobial Discovery Programmes. The discussions delved into the Clinical development and use of new agents, emphasizing the importance of long-term security in accessing novel antimicrobials. Another engaging panel debated the sufficiency of existing push and pull incentives to fortify the antibiotic R&D pipeline, ensuring these crucial treatments reach patients. Came across this great read about the use of metabolomics in drug discovery. It is definitely a powerful tool that complements our traditional ways to examine and evaluate the favorability of drug candidates for therapeutic development and identify their mechanisms of action. At MAX BioPharma, in collaboration with scientists at Metaba, we have started to apply metabolomics in our drug discovery efforts and development of our oxysterol drug candidates for multiple indications including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), cystic fibrosis (CF), atherosclerosis, and chronic inflammation. There are no FDA/EMA/etc approved therapies for mitochondrial disease. We need to work together to thoughtfully collect and integrate data to inform clinically meaningful endpoints and de-risk clinical trial design.
