Watch this excellent short film about the Grand Canyon, one of the Wonders of the World, and Indigenous people who have ancient and sacred ties to the canyon.
Today Grand Canyon National Park turns 105. Listen and learn from Native people whose ancestors inhabited what is now Grand Canyon National Park long before the park service existed, and who continue to live, work, and honor deep cultural ties here today. https://lnkd.in/e_6WajCj

Wahweap Hoodoos The Wahweap Hoodoos, Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument, Utah. While these magnificent (and fragile) white rock hoodoos are located in southern Utah, the closest town to them is actually Page, Arizona. United States

One number for the #WorldOceanDay that's in my head: 0,001%. This is the approximate % of the deep seafloor that has been visually observed in the world up to date. This number comes from some of the amazing work presented at the DOOS annual meeting, specifically work done at the Ocean Discovery League (@oceandiscoveryleague). And if you are surprised just like me, you can look up existing literature on the topic, for example, this position paper from the European Marine Board IVZW (published in 2015, but highly relevant today; check page 15 if you are curious about the numbers and %s): https://lnkd.in/duZEc8M5 Numbers are only a partial component of human knowledge and existence. So, for this World Ocean Day, I share Bob Randall's voice. His story about the Land teaches much more about the Ocean than any number can: https://lnkd.in/d5xudDHJ
Do we own the land?

Check out this incredible descent! When you see masters who are skilled in high risk situations you can see and feel the conviction deep inside them. Flow is noise-free and doubt-free. The masters create, improvise and respond. Watch how he is in full conviction, adjusting, leaning into what is in front of him. Flow can feel psychological, but it comes from preparation! No shortcuts. Here is 'no shortcuts' in action!

Always impressed with the human capacity to test and innovate & refusal to accept limits. Check out this unbelievable freeride from Bienvenido Aguado in the Red Bull Rampage in Utah. I have no idea how he would practice this but his front flip over the canyon was breathtaking. Incredible skills and bravery from a pioneer. Credit: Red Bull Rampage

Sad statistic: nearly 20% of collisions at some low-rise nonresidential buildings in the Midwest are hummingbirds, and those numbers are likely undercounts since hummingbirds are so small, hard to detect, and quick to be scavenged. How we can help: for new buildings, use bird friendly products like Guardian Glass North America's Bird1st portfolio, because there's something for every aesthetic and budget - from frit to etch to UV, Guardian has products that have been tested and approved by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) as well as following their 2x2 inch spacing best practices. For existing buildings and residences there are many DIY options, and both ABC and FLAP Canada have excellent resources on the topic. Back story: Hummingbird migration gives me immense anxiety. As they move through the environment they're at high risk of window collision simply because they need to cover so much more ground than other birds when it comes to finding food sources. And because we love our flowers, and we love to look at our flowers, we often have the dangerous combination of pollinator plants near buildings... if those buildings use bird safe products on their windows, great! But otherwise we're actively putting hummingbirds in harm's way. #hummingbirds #birdsafebuildings #greenbuildings #pollinators #guardianglass #bird1st #birdsafeglass #birdglass
Enjoy the ruby-throated hummingbirds while you can because some start departing as soon as early August! By late November, they'll be in wintering grounds in parts of coastal south Florida, Mexico and Central America. 📷 Courtney Celley/USFWS
