3.5 weeks till the half marathon and do you know why I'm running? 🤩 (picture was from my 8 mile training run in Florida this past weekend) 💫 To raise funds for Girls on the Run Philadelphia, a non profit after school program for 3rd-8th grade girls in Philadelphia where we inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running 💫 Did you know that out of the 5,000+ girls we've served, 75% of participants receive a scholarship to participate? (Majority of the participants live at or below the poverty level) 💫 Did you know that our program helps girls learn critical life skills? Like how to process emotions, resolve conflict, make intentional decisions, etc. 💫 Children today are exposed to longstanding gender stereotypes, societal obstacles and cultural challenges that can be detrimental to their emotional and physical health. Our program helps girls recognize their potential and rise above limiting gender expectations. Girls on the Run programs are about so much more than running – they make an impact at a critical age when confidence and physical activity decline. 💥 As a previous coach and current associate board member, I invite you to help us make a difference in the lives of these girls! https://lnkd.in/gterZwz6

Little Free Library in Wasco: made by the community, for the community By: Sam Hoyle Posted at 5:18 PM, Jul 24, 2024, www.turnto23.com City of Wasco, California. 23ABC (KERO-TV) — Devin Lowe, a recent Wasco High School grad, is chasing his Eagle Scout honors. As part of the process, he opted to do his service project by constructing a Little Free Library for the public to use. 23ABC caught up with Lowe in front of his newly minted Little Free Library and noted he bounced around a few ideas before choosing to construct the library. Lowe said his goal was to provide access to #literature in his community, where library hours are limited and other factors could prohibit someone from visiting the library. Margret Aldrich, Director of Communications for the LFL #Nonprofit, said the bulk of #California's nearly 8,000 #library boxes can be found in metropolitan settings, and she said the group always finds it exciting to see one pop up in a rural community. According to the Nonprofit's website, prior to Lowe constructing his, there's only one Little Free Library in Wasco. Ian Anderson, MPA, Executive Director for the KERN LITERACY COUNCIL applauded the effort by Lowe to increase access to books, saying something like this project reduces the barrier to entry for people all around the area. full story: https://lnkd.in/gmtJ_yB3 #KernLiteracyCouncil empowers Kern County with #AdultLiteracy, #FamilyLiteracy, #ESLClasses, and #WorkplaceLiteracy. BEING PRESENT MATTERS. CIS knows that good attendance in school is critically important to student success. That’s why we are laser-focused on addressing chronic absenteeism. Brady, a CIS 6th grader, was missing too many days of school. His CIS Site Coordinator, Ms. Randolph, met with him to dig deeper and understand the root cause of his absences. She stressed to Brady the importance of being in school every day, and together they brainstormed ways he could improve his attendance. Ms. Randolph then drew up an “attendance contract” for Brady, holding him accountable by checking in with him each morning when he came to school. Brady’s small successes led to greater enthusiasm - soon he was proactively checking in with Ms. Randolph each day, proud to let her know that he was in school. Over the next semester, his attendance improved tremendously! The real reasons students miss school are often complex and misunderstood, ranging from transportation issues to mental health concerns, food or housing insecurity, or having to work or provide childcare for siblings. Students are often absent because the support and resources to address these challenges are often absent. CIS is present in schools every day, helping students like Brady with their attendance and any other obstacles keeping them from success. 👉With your donations, CIS can place Site Coordinators in schools to address students’ needs and ensure they show up for school, ready to learn! cischarlotte.org/donate #BeingPresentMatters #AttendanceMatters #inschoolseveryday #AllinforKids #WeekofGiving

🗣️ We're Tackling Inequal Access to Education As per the buildOn methodology, it's a priority in all Magic Future Foundation schools that girls and boys are educated in equal numbers. So far, in our 25 schools built, 4,154 girls and 4,132 boys have been enrolled. And every community leadership committee have been committed to levelling out these numbers even more by continuing to seek out any out-of-school children in their village. 🏫 Check out the full interview between Founder of buildOn, Jim Ziolkowski, and Founder of our Magic Future Foundation, Stefan Wissenbach, over on our YouTube channel. ⚖️ #equalaccesstoeducation #nonprofit #educationmatters #genderequality

When I started using outdoor and experiential education as my primary approach to teaching high school I immediately saw the changes in my students' faces, their body language, and how they navigated and interacted with the world. I could see and sense in their interactions with the world the shift in what we now call 'mindset'. Back in the day, people would ask me how I knew that what I was doing with these teens would be effective, long-lasting, and have an impact. In short, they asked, "What is the evidence?" Back then, my stock response was to say "Ask me in 10 years, then we will know how they are doing and how we did." Here are two personal stories that demonstrate the power of outdoor education to change lives. Last week, I saw a post (linked below) about OBCA staff member Roger Lopez and the critical role he plays as a lead instructor for Outward Bound California. His life journey is inspirational and out on course he is a role model for his students. It is not a coincidence that Roger is an alum of Get Out and Learn (getoutandlearn.org), a high school experiential and outdoor education program in the SFUSD. His experiences in that program offered him the chance to go on Outward Bound, which turned the outdoors into a lifetime career and put him on the pathway toward becoming an outstanding OBCA staff member. Similarly, Belynda Ray is an alum of GOAPe, a predecessor program to GOAL. Her success in that program led her to become an OBCA Pinnacles scholar and a life-changing experience in the wilderness. Today, decades later, Roger and Belynda continue to pay it forward to the next generation. The partnership between OBCA and community organizations give youth like Belynda and Roger the opportunity to go on life-changing experiences with Outward Bound California. None of this is possible without the scholarships OBCA offers. IT IS individual donations that make what seems financially impossible, possible. Yes, it was a previous generation of generous donors like you who changed Roger and Belynda's lives. Tomorrow (May 8th), we rappel to support the next generation of Rogers and Belyndas. Please join us with your financial support. It's worth it. https://lnkd.in/gMVc-mTU Roger's Journey with OBCA https://lnkd.in/gT34Rb9V
