76% of Namibians now have access to healthcare facilities The Ministry of Health and Social Services says it has reported significant progress in healthcare provision, with over 76% of Namibians now living within a 10-km radius of healthcare facilities. Speaking at the opening of the National Health and Social Services Conference, Health Minister Kalumbi Shangula highlighted the progress made in healthcare provision in the past three decades. In addition to increasing access, the Ministry has focused on upgrading health infrastructure and services to improve the quality of care. I am pleased to share the news from the interview I gave to the Ethiopian news service(ENS), which ENS have posted on it's official Facebook page: "Preparations are underway for #healthcare #facilities to implement the #accreditation #system. Addis Ababa; March 6/2016 E. C (ENS): The Ministry of Health has announced that preparations are in progress for healthcare facilities to undergo the accreditation program to enhance the effectiveness of the country's health services. During the interview with ENS, Dr. Abas Hassen ,Lead Executive Officer of Health System Innovation and Quality at the Ministry of Health, highlighted various reform activities aimed at improving the quality and accessibility of health services are being implemented . Dr. Abas emphasized the importance of capacitating health institutions in terms of resources, skilled manpower, infrastructure, and information management to enhance the quality of health services. He mentioned that tripartite agreement signed and collaborative efforts are underway between the Ministry of Health, the Ethiopian Accreditation Service, and the Ethiopian Standards Institute to design and implement the Ethiopian Healthcare accreditation program(EHAP) as well as to prepare health institutions for accreditation/recognition. Addressing the accreditation requirements for health centers and hospitals, Dr. Abas emphasized the need for adequate resources and infrastructure. He mentioned the development of a system to assess and recognize these essential components. A ten-year roadmap has been developed to establish a nationwide accreditation system for health facilities, with the accreditation standards preparation expected to be finalized this year for implementation next year. Dr. Abas highlighted the significant benefits of implementing the accreditation system in enhancing the quality of healthcare services and improving accessibility for citizens with high quality,safety and equity. After being associated with healthcare and seeing the changing landscape in Pakistan, I believe Pakistan healthcare is at a crossroad ready to take much needed leap in the right direction. You can rightly ask “WHY” and here are my arguments and would love to have your comments: Government Commitment: Healthcare is the new buzz word and main crowd puller in Pakistan’s power corridors. A healthy race is on amongst provincial governments to score big in this area and expectations are that there will be a much improved healthcare budget allocation in fiscal year 2024-25. Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): Collaboration between the public and private sectors is expanding, bringing in resources and expertise to enhance healthcare delivery and outcomes. Focus on data driven interventions will further strengthen the opportunities for better utilisation of government funding. International Support: Organizations like the WHO and the World Bank are providing financial assistance and technical expertise to strengthen Pakistan's healthcare system. Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Now with ovet 03 years of experience in KPK and Punjab, it is expected that the program will continue and focus will be on improving efficiency. Utilisation of UHC data in relation to health outcomes and social impact can be the next game changer in Pakistan’s healthcare landscape. Impact of COVID-19: The pandemic has emphasized the need for resilient healthcare systems, driving investments in infrastructure and preparedness.
