Enjoying a little @chilipeppers as the @olympics #closingceremony wraps up… and couldn’t help but wonder… and maybe there’s a completely reasonable explanation for this, but… why do we have a separate @paralympics ? Is #blindfootball or being in awe of a person weighing 100# throwing up triple their weight any less amazing than breakdancing or non para-badminton? Both games are in Paris, but only one will dominate tv for 2 weeks, only one will be talked about around the water cooler, etc.. and I’ve not yet gotten into how fewer global sponsors, how much less star power stays on for the @paralympics - I’m guessing James, Phelps, etc won’t be making it back to see the para version of the sport that made them heroes… or opportunities for athletes with disabilities to get endorsement deals… hell, the first Paralympic athlete to get on the cover of a @wheatiescereal box was 2018! Over 25% of us have have a disability… yet the separation between “the disabled” and the rest of the world seems to be as strong as ever. The IOC chair praises inclusion, yet there is an entire subgroup of people that, in my opinion, are relegated to the annex of the Olympics… the kids table at turkey dinner… I say extend the Olympics another week, merge the events that you can (ie Men’s, Women’s, Men’s para, Women’s para… do we even need a different para archery event?), and be amazed at what the human spirit can achieve, despite the odds, the criticism, the nos or not having the body mechanics seemingly built for a chosen sport. #disabilityisnotinability @jenarnoldmd #fightthegoodfight #evenstevenolympics2028

The remarkable achievements of this year's Paralympic athletes serve as a shining reminder that disability does not equal inability. Paralympic athletes prove that disability doesn't mean inability, but rather, remarkable ability and determination. Paralympic athletes offer valuable lessons that extend beyond sports, inspiring us to reframe our perspectives and attitudes. Here are some lessons we can learn from them: 1. Resilience and adaptability: Overcoming physical limitations and pushing through challenges demonstrates remarkable resilience and adaptability. 2. Determination and perseverance: Paralympic athletes show us that with unwavering determination and perseverance, we can achieve greatness despite obstacles. 3. Inclusive mindset: They promote equality, challenging societal norms and stereotypes, and encouraging us to embrace diversity. 4. Focus on ability, not disability: Paralympic athletes highlight the importance of focusing on capabilities rather than limitations. 5. Hard work and dedication: Their achievements demonstrate the power of hard work, dedication, and a growth mindset. 6. Inspiring others: Paralympic athletes motivate us to reevaluate our own potential and strive for excellence. 7. Embracing uniqueness: They celebrate individuality, encouraging us to embrace our differences and find strength in our unique qualities. 8. Overcoming fear and doubt: Paralympic athletes show us that we can overcome self-doubt and fear, achieving greatness through courage and determination. 9. Power of community: The Paralympic community showcases the value of support, camaraderie, and collective empowerment. 10. Redefining success: Paralympic athletes broaden our understanding of success, highlighting that achievement comes in many forms and abilities. By embracing these lessons, we can foster a more inclusive, supportive, and empowering society for everyone. Reading my write up for the first time? Have you seen this video? Did you feel the moment when it transitioned from the animation into the Athletes with disabilities exhibit their determination & grit! Curious to see how is it that these champions compete with their disabilities made me go into google search loop of Disability Classifications in Paralympic Sports. And the unique ways in which the types of Impairments: Physical, Visual & Intellectual Impairments have been classified. The complexity as well as the importance of this process in creating a competitive and inclusive environment for Paralympic athletes. Here's what I absorbed...The Key principles were on: 1. Equity: Ensuring that athletes with similar levels of impairment compete against each other to create fair and equitable competition. 2. Evidence-Based: Utilizing the latest scientific and medical research to inform classification decisions. 3. Transparency: Maintaining clear and open classification procedures, including opportunities for athletes to appeal decisions. 4. Ongoing Review: Continuously updating classification rules and practices to reflect new insights and maintain fairness. The classification system in Paralympic sports has evolved significantly since its post-WWII origins, where it initially categorized athletes based on medical diagnoses. In the 1970s-1980s, a shift to functional classification improved fairness by focusing on how impairments affect performance. The 1990s brought refinement and standardization, with the International Paralympic Committee establishing consistent rules and testing protocols. The 2000s saw international standardization and collaboration with medical professionals. Technological advancements in the 2010s enhanced accuracy and transparency. July is observed as #DisabilityPrideMonth in few countries and we have so many lessons to learn from #2024SummerParalympic to make our workplaces also as diverse, equitable, and inclusive. #InclusionInAction #Inclusion

Having watched the Paralympics end over the weekend I am so struck by how far we still have to go in creating mainstream inclusion and empathy for all of us who share our planet. This year was only the first time in history that all 22 Paralympic sports had live broadcast coverage. Can you believe that? According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Organization, an estimated 1.3 billion people have a “significant” disability. So it is amazing really that these games are still not quite seen as equal - even though they represent over 15% of the planet. My new friend, Mark Colbourne MBE spoke to me about the power of belief and the power of coaching in shifting mindset, and indeed changing your own reality. Going from a broken back to breaking world records, Mark is the most high-energy reminder that it is the ‘belief’ and the self empathy (your own understanding of where you want to go) itself that is the true differentiator. If you believe you can, you will. Whether it’s a gold medal, a new business, or a personal fitness goal, look for the end point and work back from there. If a limitation of physical ability doesn’t stop people from winning in endurance sports, don’t let your mindset pause you from reaching your dreams. #empathy #empathymatters #leadership #inspiring #paralympics #paralympicgames #paralympicgames2024 #Paris2024 #empathyeverywhere
