What's going on in the Powersports industry? Now that the election has wrapped up, dealers no longer can use that as the reason why business has been soft. Powersports dealers I've talked to are generally optimistic, however there is a background concern that any tariff wars could really hurt dealers. While some of the vehicles we sell are assembled in America, I can't think of one that doesn't have a significant amount of foreign components in it. I've already talked to one OE that is leaning towards line-iteming a tariff surcharge onto their price lists, just like the surcharges we saw during the pandemic. In summary: The October BMO Capital Markets/Powersports Business Dealer Survey revealed a -6.3% year-over-year (y/y) decline in growth across surveyed powersports dealers, down from -3.6% in September. Among off-road vehicle (ORV) brands, Polaris Inc. led performance with a -5.6% y/y decrease, slightly outperforming the overall ORV market. Other brands like BRP’s Can-Am, Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., and American Honda Motor Company, Inc. experienced steeper declines. In the heavyweight motorcycle category, Polaris's Indian Motorcycle Company brand showed the strongest performance, with a -1.7% y/y drop, while Harley-Davidson Motor Company and BRP's Can-Am Spyder/Ryker declined in line with market averages. Inventory concerns persisted, with 59% of dealers reporting excess stock, particularly in snowmobiles, boats, and motorcycles, though this was a slight improvement from 66% in September. Sales trends continue to indicate challenges, with 74% of dealers reporting declines in October, including a 36% reporting double-digit losses. While 26% experienced some growth, the market outlook remains cautious. Only 14% of dealers noted an improved outlook, while 30% said their expectations worsened amid slow retail activity, high inventory, and looming uncertainty tied to the U.S. election. This sentiment was echoed in open-ended responses, where dealers expressed concerns over reduced customer traffic and ongoing headwinds in the market. Powersports recap for June. Thanks to BMO Capital Markets for another timely industry update. In summary: The June BMO/Powersports Business Dealer Survey, based on 45 respondents, revealed a -3.0% year-over-year decline in growth across all dealers, a slight improvement from last month's -3.7% decline. Performance varied by brand, with BRP Can-Am slightly outperforming the broader off-road vehicle market, while Polaris Inc. underperformed. In the motorcycle segment, Polaris's Indian brand significantly outperformed, whereas Harley-Davidson Motor Company lagged behind. Inventory levels remain a concern, with 41% of dealers reporting excess inventory, though this is an improvement from 45% last month. Dealers' outlook has worsened month-over-month, with many citing elevated inventory levels and heavy promotions in a challenging retail environment. Sales trends in June showed that 38% of powersports dealers experienced growth, a drop from 49% in the previous month. Specific performance highlights include 40% of off-road vehicle dealers reporting growth, though overall performance remained weak, and 37% of heavyweight motorcycle dealers seeing growth, led by Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA and Polaris' Indian Motorcycle Company brands. Snowmobile sales were particularly hard hit, with only 19% of dealers reporting growth. Inventory concerns were prominent, with snowmobiles, boats, and side-by-sides being the heaviest segments. The overall dealer outlook deteriorated, with a significant portion of dealers expressing concerns about OEMs over-shipping inventory and declining consumer demand due to affordability issues. What's going on the world of powersports (or as I refer to it during our NCM Associates 20 Group moderator meetings, the FUN industry)? BMO Capital Markets and Powersports Business poll dealers each month. Here is what dealers had to say about August. In summary: The August BMO/Powersports Business Dealer Survey revealed a continued decline in sales, with an average year-over-year growth rate of -5.4%, slightly worse than July's -4.6%. Both Polaris Inc. and BRP's Can-Am brands slightly outperformed the broader off-road vehicle (ORV) market but still experienced declines, while Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Polaris’s Indian Motorcycle Company underperformed in the motorcycle segment. Inventory remains a challenge, though it has improved from last month, with 45% of dealers reporting it as too high. Dealer outlooks have slightly improved, but concerns about the challenging retail environment and macroeconomic headwinds remain prevalent. Across different segments, 30% of dealers reported sales growth, while 70% saw declines, with snowmobiles showing unexpected strength. Brands like American Honda Motor Company, Inc. and Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA showed positive growth in certain categories, but heavyweight motorcycles and ORVs struggled overall. In terms of inventory, boats, side-by-sides, and snowmobiles were reported as the heaviest segments. Despite some optimism, only 21% of dealers expressed an improved outlook for the month, with many still wary of interest rates and broader economic challenges. "Unfair Pricing at Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. Dealership. As a consumer, I expect transparency and fairness from renowned brands Honda. However, my recent experience at Globus Honda dealership fell short. I recently visited Globus Honda dealership for two wheeler services and was told the filter kit was out of stock. Upon returning on 15th Sep 24, I was charged ₹313 for the kit, despite the MRP being ₹290. It's not just about ₹23; it's about accountability and integrity. Inconsistent communication and unfair pricing can erode trust in authorized dealerships. As professionals, let's address this issue: - How can we ensure transparent pricing in the automotive industry? - What measures can prevent such discrepancies? Honda's Japanese values emphasize precision and integrity. Let's hold them to this standard. Share your insights and let's promote fair business practices! #Honda #ConsumerRights #TransparencyInPricing #UnfairPricing #Services #Leadership #CustomerExperience #AccountabilityMatters
