Are radars usually known for bringing in False positives in autonomous driving? Not anymore!! I recently came across a game-changing advancement in radar systems by NPS (Neural Propulsion System), showcased at CES 2024, that’s set to transform the autonomous vehicle landscape. When the NPS software combines with wide-aperture multiband radar, the radar-based systems would also be able to see through physical barriers like vegetation and buildings, or even see around corners. “The NPS software, which relies on raw inputs from radar hardware, improves precision in automotive applications formerly only obtained through the addition of expensive Lidar sensors and without any weather-related or operational limitations,” co-founder and CEO Behrooz Rezvani NPS has achieved a resolution that’s more than 10 times better than standard systems. This difference in resolution is crucial for reliably detecting objects at greater distances, a key factor in ensuring the safety of autonomous vehicles. The system boasts a tenfold improvement in suppressing false positives. This improvement is vital in avoiding unnecessary or erroneous reactions from the vehicle. The radar system is capable of measuring both the Doppler shift and the range simultaneously, as opposed to the sequential measurements in other systems. Michigan is building the nation’s first smart highway. Initially, three miles of I-94 will have special sensors and communication equipment to track cars and help drivers with special alerts. The project is expected to be extended an additional 40 miles in phases. The smart highway works with a series of poles placed every 200 meters (about 655 feet) along the road that hold sensor pods, compute pods and communication equipment. There are also cameras along the highway that monitor every stretch of roadway and take images that are analyzed by AI and machine learning algorithms to identify hazardous driving conditions. Alerts are sent to MDOT and drivers connected to the roadway. So far, the system can only talk to autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles but expects half of cars to have some level of autonomy by 2030.
