Escape from New York Part 5 / 5 lessons I learned in the last 10 years. I was never popular as a kid. I lived in a crappy appartment a few blocked from Rodeo Drive, in Beverly Hills. I was never part of rich crowd. Once outside of the New York elite, working at an investment management firm in Houston, it’s better to be an outsider, you notice things…. Some folks want to avoid mistakes - some value financial planning, - guidance on trusts and estates and - some want to avoid paying unnecessary taxes. As I listened to clients in Texas, What if I return to school and become a Certified Financial Planner ™? Instead of just picking stocks, a CFP credential could opened new doors. Then as a financial advisor I noticed, many advisors excelled in sales without ever having directly managed money AND some guys are really good at making money but they don’t put value on relationships. “Skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.” Wayne Gretzky In my industry, I saw an untapped opportunity in catering to a different clientele: executive women, business owners, and women navigating significant life transitions. What an engaging panel discussion on the future skills and knowledge required for financial advisers we had at the 2024 Financial Planning Academics Forum mid-year meeting! A big thank you to our panellists, Phillip Ambrose (soon to be QUT (Queensland University of Technology) graduate, Invest Blue), Dr Michelle Cull FCPA (Western Sydney University), and Andrew Gregory (UniSuper), for their valuable contribution. 🌟 Andrew highlighted the importance of balancing the head and the heart in financial advising. Industry and university collaborations will shape the future of financial planning collaboration. 🎓 Phil emphasised the need for specialist knowledge such as super re-contribution and loadings in insurance advice for his work. His advice to aspiring financial advisers is to engage in career planning early! Proactive planning can open doors and set the foundation for a successful career in financial advising. 📚 Michelle stressed the necessity of embedding digital technology into financial planning education. Technology can be leveraged to improve efficiencies to help bridge the gap between the increasing demand for advice and the available supply, freeing up more time for advisers to focus on the human side of advice and ensuring more people receive the guidance they need.
