With a digital model it simulates scenarios to automatically execute the most cost-efficient strategy. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE GLOBAL VERTICAL FARMING INDUSTRY The #VerticalFarming industry emerged at a highly propitious time in #history -- bestowing it with enormous #privileges, including access to (1) advanced innovations and technologies, (2) investments and capital, (3) large segments of informed and educated consumers, (4) modern infrastructures, and (5) established as well as expanding novel markets in an interconnected globalized Earth. At the same time, the industry’s rise coincides with the escalation of the planetary #grandchallenges – chief of which is the demand for #food – but whose security in production and supply is deeply enmeshed with other planetary grand challenges, such as #environmental #degradation -- including that of land and water -- and the deleterious impact of #climatechange, among others. This year’s observance of the #WorldFoodDay 2024 as led by the United Nations FAO has adopted the theme, “#Right to #Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future.” While Vertical Farming Is not a panacea, the global Vertical Farming #industry certainly stands as one of the few #known #sectors of agriculture that is well-positioned to help foster global #foodsecurity sustainably, reliably and resiliently across geographies, weathers, seasons and climates. To deliver on this tall, indeed noble, privilege of a #responsibility, the global Vertical Farming industry ought to exercise diligent #selfdiscipline – emphasizing #economic sustainability for its enterprises so that they also are well enabled to deliver on their crucial function of fostering both #environmental and #social sustainability. #2024VerticalFarming in Bologna, Italy: Jan. 2024 VertiFarm International Workshop, organized by the University of Bologna (under the aegis of the Bologna municipality and endorsed by International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and Italian Society for Horticultural Science (SOI), explored innovative agriculture practices. Vertical farming involves growing plants on stacked layers or vertical surfaces, utilizing enclosed, climate-controlled environments and artificial lighting. It promises to reshape current practices by optimizing resource use and minimizing environmental impacts. Should vertical farming scale - up, it will significantly contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among the debated projects, VFARM . (funded by the Italian Ministry for Research and Education) aims to implement a sustainable process that accelerates the development of vertical farming in Italy. The global vertical farming market, estimated at $5.6 billion in 2022, is projected to exceed $35 billion by 2032. Among the emerging companies, the Italian - based company ZERO is developing Vertical and Future farming projects including an innovative Technology Infrastructure in collaboration with Ca’ Foscari, University of Venice. Square Roots’ “Dark Growth” Farming Initiative Square Roots, an innovative indoor vertical farming program, is aiming to reduce energy consumption and CO2e emissions by eliminating the need for light. With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the project is using CRISPR gene-editing technology to grow plants heterotrophically, absorbing carbon from acetate. This breakthrough could revolutionize indoor farming economics, making it an affordable option for low and middle-income countries facing climate challenges while securing the food supply. The initiative is based on the research of Dr. Robert Jinkerson and Dr. Feng Jiao in sustainable acetate production and heterotrophic plant growth and aims to scale these lab findings to commercial production. Initial trials focus on lettuces and SPACE Tomatoes, with plans to expand to staple crops like sweet potatoes and cassava, which are crucial for food security in vulnerable regions. Addressing this, the AIQUA-TECH project aims to revolutionize water management by launching an innovative tool that provides precise, continuous measurements of reference Evapotranspiration (ET0) and crop coefficient (Kc), specifically for #sugar beet, and potentially extendable to other crops like #sugarcane, #corn, and #soybeans. Integrated into the #LAYERS® platform by HEMAV, this AI-driven tool will empower producers with unprecedented accurate information for each plot, optimizing irrigation demands and boosting yield estimation accuracy. AIQUA-TECH will also play a crucial role in climate-risk assessment and inform strategic decisions at the industry level. Our consortium combines the expertise of leading agro-tech company HEMAV, end users Azucarera, and the scientific community from University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna) and AIMCRA, ensuring a blend of practical application and cutting-edge innovation.
