I think we need clarity on the role of Royal Australian Navy SSNs in a future war. Their priority role should be anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) - hunting an enemy's submarines and naval surface combatants. A land-strike capability should be a secondary role, and we need to be realistic about the weight of fire able to be delivered in a realistic scenario. Its not sufficient to generate Deterrence by Punishment, particularly against an adversary like #China. My latest piece in the Australian Strategic Policy Institute Strategist explores this issue and explains why a focus on 'deterrence by denial' at sea will generate greater cost than launching small numbers of TLAMs against the Chinese mainland.

Analysis - Bigger fleet, more firepower, jobs for decades – just add dollars! t is amazing what a little cold hard cash – an extra $11 billion bringing the total to $38 billion over 10 years to be exact – can do. The federal government has tried to work wonders by piling the cash into the defence budget to achieve three of what seemed like impossible goals in the shape of the future Royal Australian Navy fleet announced today. In its response to an analysis of the surface combatant fleet, commissioned in response to the Defence Strategic Review, there are more large frigates and destroyers and new classs of smaller but lethal frigates and large autonomous vessels. This plus their vastly increased missile launch capability answers persistent calls from the defence lobby for more firepower to counter China. Then the government offers security for the nation’s two naval shipbuilding centres. So the defence lobby is happy, the unions and state governments are happy – everyone is happy as the fleet expands from 11 to 26 vessels. Well not exactly. #manufacturing #manufacturingnews #shipbuilding #navy https://lnkd.in/gQCehuYj

The Indo-Pacific region has entered a new missile age as more and more countries in the region develop more and more long-range strike capabilities: each nation individually seeking deterrence while as a whole steering the region into ever-more dangerous waters. Australia and Japan—are relative latecomers. By the mid-2030s, the region will see thousands of short and intermediate-range missiles fielded on a variety of platforms. #AUKUS and Australia’s own recent defense strategic reviews have transformed Canberra’s outlook, and Japan has embarked on a historic rethink of its national defense procurement plans and strategy. https://lnkd.in/gEikbCqx

The US submarine which just went east of Suez is a special operations mothership On November 5, a US military headquarters disclosed the unusual movement of an Ohio-class submarine into the US Central Command's area of responsibility, an event typically kept confidential. This submarine is not a standard Ohio-class SSBN but one of the four converted SSGNs, equipped with a formidable array of Tomahawk cruise missiles and special features for covert operations. It includes "lock out chambers" for divers and a "dry deck shelter" for mini-submarines, enhancing its capability for stealth insertion of special forces like Navy SEALs. The SSGN's stealth and silence, along with its special forces capacity for more than 60 operators, make it a significant strategic asset in operations where detection by adversaries is highly unlikely. The public announcement of its presence could be a strategic move, signaling to hostile groups like the Houthi rebels the readiness and reach of US military capabilities. https://lnkd.in/e2NKf-Vu

Germany Approves Deployment of New US Long-Range Weapons Since leaving the INF Treaty, the US Army has been developing new ground-launched weapons, now set for Germany in 2026. WASHINGTON — By 2026, the US Army will start deploying its advanced long-range munitions to Germany under a newly signed agreement. This strategic move aligns with the upcoming NATO summit and signifies a major shift in military capabilities. “The United States will begin episodic deployments of the long-range fires capabilities of its Multi-Domain Task Force [MDTF] in Germany in 2026, as part of planning for enduring stationing of these capabilities in the future,” stated the White House. These cutting-edge units will eventually include SM-6, Tomahawk, and hypersonic weapons, offering ranges far exceeding current land-based firepower in Europe. This development follows the US's withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty in 2019, which previously restricted ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers. Post-treaty, the US Army accelerated its development of several new weapon systems within these ranges. By 2026, Germany could host three advanced US Army weapons: 1. Lockheed Martin’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM): Initially targeting within the 500-kilometer range. 2. Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW): Capable of striking targets 2,776 kilometers away. 3. Mid-Range Capability (Typhon): Utilizing Raytheon's SM-6 missiles and Tomahawks to hit targets within intermediate ranges. Currently, the Typhon system has seen deployment abroad, first with the 1st Multi-Domain Task Force in the Philippines earlier this year. The PrSM is anticipated to follow, potentially reaching operational status later this year. However, the timeline for the hypersonic weapon remains uncertain as development continues. The Royal Marines, were recently demonstrating their commitment to NATO and readiness during rigorous training for any potential threats, including nuclear, in the unforgiving Arctic Circle, as part of the Royal Navy's amphibious task group, which aims to swiftly respond to crises in Europe's critical and vital waterways and strategic routes. This timely preparation underscores their readiness to respond to the complexities of modern warfare and to deter any further aggression west, from Russia. CBRN warfare presents some of the most daunting challenges in modern warfare, compounded by the extreme cold of the Arctic environment. The elite marines engaged in drills to counter chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear attacks (CBRN), in extreme cold conditions and challenging terrain, ensuring they are well-prepared for any potential scenario, by training in the Arctic Circle, Sweden and NATO's newest member, Finland. This emphasizes the alliance's collective defense posture and solidarity. Challenging and rewarding, these CBRN exercises are crucial for enhancing confidence and fostering interoperability among the forces involved. and have gained increased significance following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Royal Marines are at the forefront of developing this capability within UK Defense, adapting plans to meet various potential scenarios, ensuring collective security and preparedness in the northern regions. Post exercise debriefing is now underway to analyse lessons learned and include some staff from the Defense CBRN Centre who were actively involved in the exercises, facilitating the exchange of lessons learned to enhance the overall preparedness of UK Defense and it's allies. #cbrn #cbrne CBRNE ATLANTIC BRIDGE (CAB) #exercise #training #NATO #Russia #sweden #articcircle #Finland #military UK Ministry of Defence Royal Navy #royalmarines #royalnavy #defense #defence #defenceindustry #coldclimate #coldweather #planning #leadership #technology Image Crown Copyright.

BREAKING: The President of the United States, Joe Biden is expected to make one of the most Important Decisions of his Presidency tonight, as he Orders a Response for the One-Way “Suicide” Drone Attack by Iranian-Backed Forces against the Tower 22 Patrol Base in Northeastern Jordan. So, the Response will likely come in upwards of 3 Stages which will Target the Capabilities of Iranian-Backed Militias in Syria and Iraq with Kinetic Strikes, alongside Cyberattacks on Facilities used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran. This will be followed by Kinetic Strikes against Strategic Locations in Iran related to their Nuclear, Ballistic Missile, and Drone Capabilities. The Strikes will more than likely come from U.S. Air Force Combat Aircraft across the Middle East as well as Tomahawk Land-Attack Cruise Missiles launched by U.S. Navy Vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
