Germany Approves Deployment of New US Long-Range Weapons Since leaving the INF Treaty, the US Army has been developing new ground-launched weapons, now set for Germany in 2026. WASHINGTON — By 2026, the US Army will start deploying its advanced long-range munitions to Germany under a newly signed agreement. This strategic move aligns with the upcoming NATO summit and signifies a major shift in military capabilities. “The United States will begin episodic deployments of the long-range fires capabilities of its Multi-Domain Task Force [MDTF] in Germany in 2026, as part of planning for enduring stationing of these capabilities in the future,” stated the White House. These cutting-edge units will eventually include SM-6, Tomahawk, and hypersonic weapons, offering ranges far exceeding current land-based firepower in Europe. This development follows the US's withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty in 2019, which previously restricted ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers. Post-treaty, the US Army accelerated its development of several new weapon systems within these ranges. By 2026, Germany could host three advanced US Army weapons: 1. Lockheed Martin’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM): Initially targeting within the 500-kilometer range. 2. Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW): Capable of striking targets 2,776 kilometers away. 3. Mid-Range Capability (Typhon): Utilizing Raytheon's SM-6 missiles and Tomahawks to hit targets within intermediate ranges. Currently, the Typhon system has seen deployment abroad, first with the 1st Multi-Domain Task Force in the Philippines earlier this year. The PrSM is anticipated to follow, potentially reaching operational status later this year. However, the timeline for the hypersonic weapon remains uncertain as development continues. “The People's Republic of China (PRC) and Russia continue to modernize, diversify, and expand their nuclear arsenals while deploying space and counter-space capabilities to hold our forces at risk. They are also fielding more advanced offensive missiles—ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic—in greater numbers to not only deter involvement in a regional conflict but also to directly target the U.S. homeland. The scale and scope of these multidimensional threats present significant risks to the American people and the homeland, U.S. national interests, our deployed forces, and our allies and partners.” - John Plumb, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy https://lnkd.in/gaFEb_HF #militaryradar #missiledefense #airdefense #hypersonicmissiles #ballisticmissiles #cruisemissile NORAD & US Northern Command Missile Defense Agency Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Security Cooperation Agency U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command Army Futures Command Army Air & Missile Defense Cross-Functional Team U.S. Army Materiel Command Congressional Research Service US Government Accountability Office Congressional Budget Office Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance National Defense Industrial Association - (NDIA) Tennessee Valley Chapter Huntsville Air Defense Artillery Association

The U.S. Army has reintroduced anti-ship weaponry into its arsenal, marking a return to its historical roots in coastal defense. During the recent Valiant Shield military exercises, the Army successfully sank a moving target using the new Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). This event signifies the Army’s renewed focus on anti-ship capabilities amid rising tensions with China. The strike involved the Autonomous Multidomain Launcher, an unmanned version of the HIMARS rocket truck, which hit the decommissioned USS Cleveland 40 nautical miles from shore. The Army's PrSM, designed to replace the older ATACMS missile, can engage targets over 310 miles away, a range previously restricted by the now-defunct U.S.-Russian Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty. Valiant Shield, held biennially across the northern Mariana Islands, includes participants from the U.S., Japan, the Philippines, and Australia. The recent PrSM strike was part of a SINKEX exercise, where live weapons are used to sink decommissioned ships to provide troops with real-world firing experience. The PrSM is integral to the Army's strategy of creating a no-go zone for enemy ships and aircraft by deploying brigade-sized Multi-Domain Task Forces (MDTFs). These units, equipped with long-range air defense and artillery, can significantly disrupt enemy operations within a 310-mile radius, complementing the efforts of other U.S. military branches in the Pacific theater. The Army's reintegration of anti-ship missiles highlights its adaptive response to the evolving geopolitical landscape, particularly the challenge posed by China's military expansion. By enhancing its coastal defense capabilities, the Army aims to maintain relevance in potential conflicts in the Indo-Pacific region. This development also addresses the broader strategic need for a multifaceted defense approach, ensuring that the Army can contribute effectively alongside the Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force in a comprehensive joint force operation. The PrSM’s capability to extend its range and versatility further strengthens the Army's role in safeguarding American interests in the Pacific. **Citations:** - Popular Mechanics.

🇨🇳❄️🇺🇸 U.S. Air Force fighters based in #Alaska recently intercepted a Chinese H-6 bomber near the state's airspace, highlighting the increasingly assertive military posturing by both the United States and China in the Pacific region. The intercept was carried out by fighter jets under the command of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The #H6bomber, a long-range aircraft capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons, was detected approaching the Air Defense Identification Zone (#ADIZ) off the coast of Alaska. Although the bomber did not enter U.S. sovereign airspace, its proximity triggered a rapid response from NORAD. This incident is part of a broader trend of Chinese military aircraft operating near #sensitive #areas, demonstrating China's increased willingness to #test U.S. defenses and extend its #strategic #influence.

South Korean defense officials reported that North Korea launched multiple cruise missiles toward the Yellow Sea early Wednesday morning. The range and other details of the missiles were not provided, and further analysis is being conducted with the US military. This is the first such launch since September, when North Korea test-launched two long-range strategic cruise missiles. The North's 5-year defense plan announced in 2021 includes the development of medium- and long-range cruise missiles, which are believed to be intended for use in potential contingencies on the Korean Peninsula. The US and South Korean forces have been on high alert for military activity by North Korea, following artillery shell firings and a ballistic missile launch earlier in the month. #AsiaRisk #NorthKorea #Japan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gZfKCaFM

“…our Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system is designed to protect the homeland – including Hawaii and Alaska – against ICBM threats from North Korea…the PRC and Russia routinely suggest that U.S. homeland missile defenses are able to thwart their advanced nuclear strike capabilities and therefore undermine strategic stability. This assertion is false. The size and sophistication of the PRC and Russia's nuclear arsenals preclude any such possibility. We are constantly improving and upgrading the performance of our GMD system.” – John Plumb, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy We cannot assume that adversary threats to the US will arrive from the most obvious attack vectors. Senior Security Correspondent at Asia Times, Ph.D. student at the People's Friendship University of Russia.
Today in Asia Times, I wrote about the US ramping up missile production for a potential Taiwan Strait conflict, highlighting the institutional and industrial hurdles that might hinder this effort. The US Air Force's Enterprise Test Vehicle (ETV) project aims to develop low-cost, high-production cruise missiles to counter China's military buildup, involving key players like Anduril Industries and Leidos subsidiary Dynetics. However, material shortages, supply chain constraints, and inconsistent defense orders pose significant risks to sustaining this production surge. I also explored the broader implications of the ETV project within the context of global military dynamics, drawing parallels with Russia's effective use of retrofitted Soviet-era bombs in Ukraine. The project's success hinges on adopting commercial off-the-shelf components and modern manufacturing techniques to maintain economic munition stockpiles for prolonged conflicts. Yet, despite these innovations, the US faces daunting obstacles in upscaling its defense industrial base, which may undermine its strategic readiness in a high-intensity conflict over Taiwan.

Russian military analysts describe scenario for potential attack on Russia On the eve of the active phase of the operation, according to Russian military experts, the enemy will take potentially aggressive action, including provocations, for the purpose of controlling the situation, as well as intensify all types of intelligence activity MOSCOW/ Russian military analysts have presented their vision of a likely scenario for an attack on Russia by a hypothetical adversary in an article in the magazine Voyennaya Mysl (Military Thought), a publication of the Russian Defense Ministry. In the article, the authors speculate that an attack might begin with a rapid global strike alongside several massive missile and aviation strikes on the country's administrative-political and military-industrial infrastructure. In this regard, the Russian Aerospace Forces would play a predominant role in repelling potential aggression. Enemy forces and means According to the article, a likely enemy is considering creation of compact, highly mobile combined multi-role groups of troops capable of inflicting heavy losses on the administrative-political and military-industrial infrastructure in all spheres: on the ground, on the high seas, in the air, in outer space and in cyberspace. These new-type military formations are designated as "joint operative formations" (JOF). The combat and numerical strength of the enemy's JOF in peacetime may be 50-70% of that required in wartime. "The most expected ways of using the JOF are air-ground (maritime) operations (campaigns). They would begin with air offensive operations (from 2030 air-space, and in the future space-air operations), consisting of a rapid (instant) global strike and several (from 2-3 to 5-7) massive missile and air strikes," the article points out. It is emphasized that aviation would be one of the first military wings to enter combat operations, possibly even before the deployment of the main battle group. South Korea showcased its Hyunmoo-5 missile for the first time during the Armed Forces Day ceremony on October 1, 2024, in Seongnam. This display highlights concerns over North Korea's nuclear threats and signifies a strong defense posture. The Hyunmoo-5, a ground-to-ground ballistic missile capable of carrying an 8-ton warhead, is designed to target underground bunkers, playing a vital role in South Korea's defense strategy. The ceremony featured mobile launchers for the Hyunmoo-5, accompanied by around 5,000 troops and various military hardware. Key assets included the KF-21 fighter, F-35A stealth jets, Apache helicopters, and special operations troops conducting parachute jumps. U.S. military support was evident with the participation of a B-1B heavy bomber and F-15K jets, underscoring U.S. security commitments to South Korea. This year's Armed Forces Day responds to increased tensions from North Korea, which has recently conducted ballistic missile tests and demonstrated uranium enrichment capabilities. The South Korean defense ministry highlighted the event's intent to showcase its overwhelming retaliatory capabilities through its three-axis deterrence strategy, encompassing the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation plan, the Kill Chain preemptive strike system, and the Korea Air and Missile Defense system. A military parade in downtown Seoul followed, celebrating the country's military founding anniversary. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #SouthKorea Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gzkaBMpU
