As the November U.S. elections heat up, they are set to dominate media coverage in the upcoming months, highlighting the crucial role of independent media in shaping public discourse. The Republican National Convention (RNC), recently held in Milwaukee, has set the stage for this year’s presidential race, with Donald Trump accepting the presidential nomination. Beyond detailed on-site reporting, POLITICO collaborated with CNN to host the CNN-POLITICO Grill at the RNC, featuring exclusive interviews with key Republican politicians. This forum and the combined coverage provided deep insights into the election's complexities, voter sentiments, and the potential policy impacts of the election results. Looking ahead, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in August promises to be equally compelling, with another CNN-POLITICO Grill set to ensure thorough and independent coverage. ___ Goli Sheikholeslami Cally Baute Brad Dayspring Jonathan Greenberger Justine Lore Amal Hijazi Anne McElvoy Kevin Baron Meridith McGraw Victoria Guida Meredith Lee Hill Eugene Daniels II Zach Warmbrodt Alex Burns Paul McLeary #POLITICO #USElections #RNC #DNC #Journalism #AxelSpringer

One of the most controversial and media-heavy elections ever had its first presidential debate last night with former president Donald J. Trump (R) and current vice-president Kamala Harris (D). 🇺🇸 🦅 From a professional perspective, both candidates looked like they could use additional media training as they circled around questions, lost track of their time limits, and other areas of improvement. Harris's team has open the conversation for a second debate, waiting on Trump's camp to comment. Many argued that the mediation and coverage (ABC) of the debate was one-sided, while others will disagree. The reality is that both are in a key position of media presence with the new and future voters who use media as part of their decision making process, and therefore having a great media training is a key aspect. Respectfully, let us know who had a better debate and who you think won the first round of what is looking like a two round debate series. 🤔 ____________ #2024Elections #Trump #Harris #MediaTraining #US #Politics 📽 The Guardian News | https://lnkd.in/gSU369px 📰 The Washington Post | https://lnkd.in/gEN62YGd

Yet, amid these unprecedented events lies a chance to reflect on how we got here. The race has been impacted by a variety of political forces that are not normally top-of-mind for the American public, but provide a chance for us to consider how our institutions have shaped this election, and how that knowledge can shape future reform efforts.

What role can mobile voting play in our elections? In the latest interview for our Re-Formation series, Todd Connor, CEO of Veterans for All Voters, sat down with Bradley Tusk, philanthropist, venture capitalist, political strategist, and author of "Vote From Your Phone," to answer this question. Bradley shares his political insights--having served in a number of roles such as Deputy Governor of Illinois and NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg's campaign manager--explaining that it's ultimately the incentives, not the politicians themselves, that drive behavior among elected officials. In this spirit, he envisions mobile voting as a powerful tool to engage more people in the political process, eventually leading to better politics and policies for all Americans. Ballotpedia's latest findings reveal that as of April 2024, 71% of the 11,945 elections studied are uncontested. This trend is particularly pronounced in Colorado, Louisiana, Nebraska, and Oregon, where every current candidate is running unopposed. Here’s why uncontested elections are problematic and what they mean for voters: Reduced Voter Choice: Without competition, voters are left without real choices, undermining the democratic process. Incumbent Advantage: Incumbents benefit from name recognition, established networks, and better fundraising, deterring new candidates. Political Apathy: Potential candidates and voters alike are discouraged by the perceived futility and high barriers of entering politics. Electoral Barriers: Stringent requirements and high costs of running for office can be insurmountable obstacles for many. Despite these challenges, the prevalence of uncontested elections also presents unique opportunities, especially for independent candidates. Here are some strategies for those considering a run: Research and Target Opportunities: Identify offices with frequent uncontested elections. Build a Local Network: Engage with community members and gain their support. Leverage Media: Use traditional and digital media platforms to increase visibility. Craft Distinct Messaging: Develop clear and compelling campaign messages. Focus on Financing: Start fundraising early and maintain financial transparency. Mobilize Volunteers: Grassroots efforts can significantly boost your campaign. Promote Voter Turnout: Organize registration drives and GOTV initiatives. Addressing the root causes of uncontested elections is crucial to enhancing electoral competitiveness and strengthening our democracy. 🌟 Join the Movement: There is still time to launch your campaign for a state or local position. Check filing deadlines and utilize resources like GoodParty.org to help you run and win. Let's work together to ensure our elections are truly representative and competitive. The upcoming presidential elections in the US have been in the spotlight over the past few days since #PresidentBiden endorsed #KamalaHarris as the democratic candidate. Despite the new dynamic in the election campaign, the political discourse still continues to be extremely polarizing. And the #fourthestate - the media- plays a decisive role in it. In the current episode of our podcast "Think. Debate. Inspire.", Henry Alt-Haaker and Dr. Pradnya Bivalkar speak with Jay Rosen from the New York University about 📌 how the American media system has evolved over the past decades, 📌 the role that the American media has traditionally played in creating and strengthening or weakening the persona of presidential candidates, 📌 why and how the far right rejects mainstream media, 📌and last but not least, the phenomenon of #DonaldTrump. Do give this very timely and insightful conversation a listen and let us know what you think 👉 https://lnkd.in/dUFyRsGJ (Disclaimer: This recording took place just after the presidential debate between Donald Trump and President Biden and before it became clear that President Biden would retract his nomination.)
