🔬 Exciting Discovery in Blood Transfusion Science! 🔬 Researchers have made a significant breakthrough in the field of blood transfusion science. A team from DTU and Lund University has discovered enzymes that can transform A and B antigens to generate ABO-universal blood. The gut symbiont Akkermansia muciniphila can degrade mucin O-glycans including ABO epitopes. The team evaluated 23 Akkermansia glycosyl hydrolases and identified exoglycosidase combinations which efficiently transformed both A and B antigens. This discovery could revolutionize blood transfusions, simplifying blood logistics and preventing ABO-mismatched transfusions. Innovative Research Within Haemophilia Treatment ✨🩸       Our groundbreaking research efforts at Novo Nordisk have led us to a novel VHH-based FVIIIa-mimetic molecule, currently in pre-clinical development, aiming to transform haemophilia A (HA) treatment. Our goal? To create the first oral HA treatment, potentially eliminating the need for injections and thereby reducing the treatment burden.      Through extensive protein engineering and formulation, the team has achieved ultra-high potency with a small molecular size, demonstrating oral availability, and a prolonged systemic half-life. What all this breaks down to is that we are making progress toward enabling a once-daily oral treatment for HA.      The recognition of our team’s abstract presented at the 2024 International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) highlights session is a testament to our commitment to innovating haemophilia treatment. We just started with the workshop from the “Core Outcome Sets for Epidermolysis Bullosa Initiative (COSEB)”. The goal is to develop core outcome sets for future trials for the rare disease epidermolysis bullosa (EB), which is accompanied by blistering from the skin. In the last thirty years, significant progress has been achieved in understanding molecular genetics and underlying pathomechanisms of EB. This has led to a range of novel and repurposed potential drugs for EB that are currently being investigated in an increasing number of clinical trials. To ensure that the most important outcome domains are consistently measured and reported in clinical trials, a multi-stakeholder, consensus-based core outcome set will be established. Many different stakeholders are involved in the initiative: patients and patient representatives, clinicians, industry, researchers and regulators. At the Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board we believe it is important to contribute to this initiative with our regulatory expertise. An excellent panel discussion today at Bamberg Health European #RareDisease Summit in Madrid. 👍 EUCOPE's Secretary General, Alexander Natz, reiterated the support for an #EU Rare Disease Action Plan, combined with a holistic approach at EU and national level to address existing challenges. 🎯 EUCOPE worked with the OD Expert Group to identify 14 policy solutions across the rare disease #lifecycle, including a coherent framework for #RWE, iterative early dialogue for #EMA, #HTA bodies and #OMP developers, an EU rare disease hub for large-scale #collaboration. #EURDS #Innovation #OrphanDrugs
