The devil is in the context. The ‘superpower’ of a project manager is a ‘helicopter view’ of the project, knowledge of its context – i.e. how different parts are interconnected and how they affect each other. The ‘superpower’ of all other members of the project team – developers, testers, designers, analysts, architects, marketers, product owners – is their domain knowledge. They possess an incomparably deeper understanding of those aspects than any project manager could ever wish for. However, it is exactly that focus that makes the ‘helicopter view’ much more difficult for them.

Production Management Tip #3 (of a series in indeterminate length): Choose the information you want before you pick your tools and processes. It's difficult for any producer, project manager, or dev director to give you what you want if they're simply given mandated infrastructure rather than concrete deliverables. Tell them what you want to know, how often you want to know it, and how you want to consume it. Let them pick the tools that they think will get you what you're asking for.

While a product manager sets the vision, goals, and business trajectory of a product, a project manager leads various projects to make those goals a reality. 𝑺𝒐 𝒊𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒆𝒓, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒓. A 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 M𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 is in charge of a product from the beginning of its lifecycle to its end. This means they set the vision of a product, direct any updates, and make sure the product is filling customer needs until the product is retired. Unlike project management, product management usually does not have a clear beginning and end. A 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 oversees projects from start to finish. Projects are a set of tasks designed to achieve a specific goal. Projects can be big, like constructing a new building, or smaller, like rolling out a new tool for a team to use. While all three require strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills, they have distinct responsibilities that contribute to a product or service's success. * Product Manager (PM): Oversees the entire product lifecycle, focusing on the overall product. They define the product strategy, roadmap, and user experience with a long-term vision. * Project Manager (PjM): Leads the execution of specific projects within a product or program. They focus on ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and according to plan. * Program Manager (PgM): Oversees a group of related projects contributing to a larger program objective. They have a broader perspective, ensuring alignment and achieving strategic program goals. Effective communication and collaboration between PMs, PJMs, and PgMs are essential for a product's success.
