Our priority remains the maximum strengthening of Ukraine's air shield. Our air defense, our combat aviation. Every night and every day during this war, Ukrainians suffer from Russian strikes. Much, indeed much, has already been done to improve our defense capabilities, but not everything necessary is in place yet. We do not stop working with our partners to acquire more air defense systems and to ensure better quality training and supplies for all units of our skies' defenders. Of course, one of the key elements of any state's air shield is combat aviation. At all levels, we must continue to tell our partners what is needed to close the Ukrainian skies to Shahed drones and missiles. Including North Korean missiles. Terror must always be defeated – this is the fundamental principle of protecting life. And this is what we will continue to talk about with our partners – just as air defense protects lives, lifting restrictions on long-range strikes will save thousands of human lives.

As actors and products in the drug trafficking world change, particularly in response to enforcement, structural changes and shifting demand, what was once old may be new again. An uptick in small aircraft used to ferry significant quantities of drugs - chief among which cocaine - between Latin American source and transit countries is a trend that Damian Gariglio highlighted for SHOC in January. Iron Dome is an air defense missile system developed by two Israeli firms with support from the U.S. Emphasis on defense. It is never used to attack or retaliate and poses no threat to Palestinians. The strongest air defense system in the world has three components: a radar that detects incoming rockets; a command-and-control system that determines the threat level; and an interceptor that, if the system determines human lives or infrastructure are at risk, seeks to destroy the incoming rocket before it strikes.

TL;DR… “we need a heck more planes*”… “A misunderstanding of air power is distorting Australia’s defence discussion. The misunderstanding is the use of combat air patrols (CAP) over surface forces as a substitute for air superiority. CAP has its place but using it as a substitute for air superiority conflates presence with utility and ignores two key insights from history. First, securing enough air superiority in required times and places is a necessary precondition for broader air and surface operations and must take precedence in concepts and planning. Second, air superiority is best secured through concentrated and sustained campaigns of offensive actions, often far removed in time and space from surface operations … The most effective methods for gaining air superiority were concentrated and sustained campaigns of typically offensive tactical actions targeting enemy forces in the air and on the ground. Air superiority was an outcome of many small independent actions by all instruments of power, often far from surface operations in time and space. It was rarely absolute and sustaining air superiority required continuous effort. … Air superiority for the Normandy landings (and incidentally for Soviet forces in Russia) was won in distant skies over many months. Allied air power was then free to attack German defences throughout Western Europe and make ‘daylight movement virtually impossible throughout most of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.’ On D-Day itself Allied aircraft flew more than 20,000 sorties to drop airborne divisions, deliver firepower, and continually observe. The 200 German sorties over Normandy on 6 June 1944 serve as a reminder air superiority is rarely absolute” * and people… as well as a lot more cheaper and intelligent autonomous air vehicles!

The beginning of the end. Through multiple deployments across thousands of miles of desert, the thundering cannon on the A-10 was the unmistakable sound of freedom. It motivated friendly ground troops and struck fear in our enemies. The first Warthog came into service decades ago, and it was arguably vulnerable to modern air defenses and an increasingly lethal air domain. No other aircraft has the same capability, the same capacity to influence the moral dimension of war (with the possible exception of the AC-130). Other airframes might be able to fill the close air support mission, but none will do it as well. When the last A-10 hits the boneyard, it will be the end of an era.
