#MusselMonday is here! 🐚 🌊 You know we love #musselcultivation, and often mussels filtering effect on the ocean is brought up as an environmental remedy. BUT, mussel cultivation does not only "clean the seas", but there are other ecosystem-enhancing effects. 🐟 Check out this article and some environmental benefits of low-trophic #aquaculture from a study by The University of Auckland and University of New England, funded by The Nature Conservancy #lowtrophicaquaculture #sustainableaquaculture #bluebioeconomy #blueeconomy https://lnkd.in/eEUT3Tai

Exciting News for Our Oceans! A new study has confirmed that seaweed and mussel farms are not just about sustainable food sources; they're also biodiversity hotspots! 🐚🐟 The article from The Fish Site details a study by The Nature Conservancy in New Zealand and the Gulf of Maine, highlighting the positive effects of seaweed and mussel farms on marine biodiversity. Key findings include the attraction of diverse fish species to these farms due to the habitat they provide, similar to natural underwater environments. This research underscores the potential of coastal aquaculture to contribute positively to marine ecosystems, offering a sustainable approach to enhancing biodiversity in oceanic habitats. 🌊 For a detailed exploration of the study's findings and implications for marine conservation and aquaculture, you can read the full article https://lnkd.in/eEUT3Tai #marineconservation #seaweed #shellfish #oceanfarms #ocean #oceanfarming #missionocean #biodiversity #ecosystem #farming #research

I love UN Biodiversity communication. Well balanced communication for short-sighted humanity. Each communication has max 5 important things to remember. : )))
"Unfortunately, wetlands are rapidly being replaced for agriculture or urban development, which takes away some of the ecosystem services that these ecosystems provide for various species, including humans." As Canadians, we have a tremendous opportunity to build upon the groundbreaking work accomplished by Cascadia Seaweed. With our vast coastline spanning 243,042 kilometers, Canada is uniquely positioned to lead the way in establishing innovative cultivation methods for global aquaculture. Cascadia Seaweed has set a commendable precedent, but what makes their approach particularly noteworthy? By delving into the specifics of their achievements, we can identify key strategies to enhance and adapt for broader application. Our extensive coastline provides a natural advantage for aquaculture expansion. By leveraging this resource, we can not only meet domestic demand but also position Canada as a global influencer in sustainable seaweed cultivation. To achieve this, Canada must actively invest in research and development, fostering collaboration between industry leaders, scientists, and policymakers. By doing so, we can pioneer advancements that set the standard for environmentally friendly and economically viable aquaculture practices on a global scale. While the potential is immense, we should also be mindful of challenges such as regulatory frameworks, environmental impact assessments, and international competition. Addressing these issues head-on will be crucial to realizing our vision of becoming a global leader in aquaculture innovation. In essence, the groundwork laid by Cascadia Seaweed offers a springboard for Canada to not only sustainably meet its seafood needs but also to contribute significantly to the advancement of aquaculture practices worldwide.

New #research shows that well-implemented #seaweed and #mussel 🦪 #aquaculture can significantly boost marine #biodiversity. Consistent results on opposite sides of the world 🇳🇿🇺🇸 suggest similar positive effects can be expected elsewhere, including around the UK 🇬🇧. We'll pass by a number of small-scale #kelp farms in the Western Isles of #Scotland 🏴 during our GB Row Challenge expedition this summer. As well as benefits for #nature, these industries boost coastal #economies. The Scottish government estimate that the seaweed industry could generate over £70M a year there by 2040. #naturebasedsolutions #blueeconomy #marinebiodiversity #coastalregeneration The Nature Conservancy Blue Marine Foundation #oceanrowing #expedition #ocean
