B&A are proud to announce that we have become a Toitū carbonreduce certified organisation. In achieving this milestone, we have measured and are now managing the operational emissions of our organisation, including business travel, electricity, vehicles and offices, and have been independently verified in accordance with ISO 14064-1. This will allow us to better understand our own impacts and to actively take steps to mitigate and reduce these as we move forward in our Toitū journey. As a specialist planning and urban design consultancy, we also work alongside clients and stakeholders to help deliver reductions in carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases as part of their future development plans. We think understanding our own carbon emissions will ultimately assist us in advising our clients how we can help design and build better urban environments that help to mitigate and reduce the impacts of a changing climate.

The UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard is out! It is probably the most advanced NZC standard in the world. It remains voluntary and some of the rules need industry testing, but it is a giant step in the right direction and there is more to come. I will be talking about this at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Conference today. Do get in touch with me, or with Andrew Moore, Carolina Caneva, Anna Tsoumi to find out more. #netzerocarbon #climateemergency #inthistogether #UKNZCBS Hilson Moran
🚨 Milestone Alert! 🚨 📃Today marks the end of the first stage of what has so far been a near-three-year journey on the road to the world’s first science-led, net-zero carbon buildings standard. 📃 It has been an honour and a pleasure to work alongside the rest of the UK NZC Buildings Standard technical steering group: Jane Anderson, Clara Bagenal George, Adam Baranowski, Julie Godefroy, Jess Hrivnak, Christine Pout, Tom Wigg, Katie Clemence-Jackson, Fabrizio Varriale and Sam Wallis, not to mention the totally wonderful Embodied Carbon Task Group (#TG1b!), all of the supporting Sector Groups, our guiding Governance Board (David Partridge in particular), and the countless others who have volunteered time towards the Standard’s development. 👪 🙏A massive thank you also to The Institution of Structural Engineers and Patrick Hayes, who have supported me throughout this process, offering me time and agency to ensure that our groups could do this job to the best of our abilities. 🚀 436 passionate individuals (myself included) have so far invested in this ambitious task, alongside 26 sponsoring firms, and the twelve Founding Member and Observer organizations and institutions who have given staff time freely. The development of the Standard should have been a multi-million-pound project, but instead, it was mostly driven by volunteer action from those who wished to address the urgent need for such a Standard. It's amazing how this industry has pulled together around this. 💪🌿 🔍 This is just the beginning. It's not a perfect document - this is the launch of the Pilot version of the Standard, available for use on real projects, but we still have work to do. Nevertheless, it is still a huge step forward for the industry, and I'm interested to hear what you all make of it. If you're not sure what to do next, then I'd suggest: 1) Downloading the Pilot version : https://lnkd.in/ddQS2tqs 🚀 2) Sharing this post with colleagues and clients👉💻 and 3) Building some net zero carbon aligned buildings 🌱💡🏫 #NetZero #NetZeroCarbon #Sustainability #RegulateEmbodiedCarbon #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #GreenBuilding #SustainableDesign #BritishStandards #NetZeroBuildings

Possibly one of the most important pieces of work around the decarbonisation of the built environment to come out. One to read absorb and repost. And hopefully it will help reframe the language used around the topic so that we stop calling anything without a gas boiler zero carbon

The #realestate industry is at a crossroads. In view of #climatechange and the challenges it brings, we need to fundamentally rethink our approach to real estate. The construction and real estate industry is responsible for more than 39% of global CO₂ emissions, making it one of the biggest contributors to the climate crisis. It is no longer enough to just build new buildings sustainably. Existing buildings also need to be urgently converted and made future-proof. This is where PREA eco comes in. Why is PREA eco necessary? 🌊 Avoiding stranded assets: Buildings without sufficient ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) measures run the risk of becoming so-called "stranded assets". This means that these properties lose value because they no longer meet the future requirements of the market and regulations. 🇪🇺 Meeting legal requirements: The EU taxonomy and the #CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) reporting requirement oblige companies to report #ESG key figures for their real estate portfolios. PREA eco supports companies in meeting these requirements. 🌱 Remaining competitive: Investors are increasingly favoring sustainable real estate. Buildings that do not meet sustainability standards will find it difficult to obtain financing in the future. 🌎 Making a positive contribution to the environment: Sustainable buildings consume less energy and resources and thus contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. PREA Eco makes it possible to operate properties in a CO2-neutral manner. PREA eco offers not just a product, but a holistic concept to make real estate future-proof and at the same time make an active contribution to #climate protection. 👇 Here are the data showing the market outlook till 2030.

A bit late to the party, but yesterday marked a groundbreaking shift for the sustainability industry. For the first time, there is clear alignment across the industry on what it truly means to be a Net Zero Carbon Building. This shared understanding is a significant leap forward in the UK’s journey toward its 2050 climate goals. The UK NZC Buildings Standard represents the first cross-industry collaboration to build consensus on Net Zero Carbon requirements across all major building types. It sets targets and procedures that are aligned with national climate goals, enabling the industry to demonstrate that their buildings and fit-out projects meet net zero carbon standards. With this framework in place, I’m excited to dive deeper into the standard and see what it will take for our buildings to achieve this ambitious target. #Sustainability #NetZero #2050Goals #GreenBuilding #FutureOfConstruction #ClimateAction

It was great being involved in the Net Zero Standard. Headline figures for embodied carbon limits start off fairly easy (for most buildings of today) but ramp down pretty quickly year on year following our planetary climate boundaries. They will require substantial changes to construction, in a very short period of time - bring it on!

How can you ensure your organisation is embracing sustainability? The best way to make a difference on climate change is to identify issues and develop solutions. That's why RLB have recently launched a new carbon estimating service for sustainable construction. This service is accessible throughout the built environment, allowing companies to measure the carbon footprint of their projects and achieve their sustainability objectives. Find the link in the comments to the full article. #builtenvironment #sustainability

Carbon Metrics for buildings | LCA/LCC | Net-Zero costed action plans | Climate Neutral pathways | ICP carbon pricing | Green building innovation & investment.
𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝔾𝕣𝕖𝕖𝕟 𝕊𝕔𝕖𝕟𝕖, An article in last Sunday’s Business Post by Colm Lauder has got lots of us talking about which green building credentials really matter five years out from 2030? Colm asks the question, why isn’t there a standardised, EU-regulated certification system, in lieu of private green building certifications like #LEED, #BREEAM, #WELL & #DNGB. However there a few standardised frameworks in place, with some ambition to harmonise green building targets in Europe, which the certification schemes can follow. However these are quite complex to understand. #CRREM - tool to measure buildings and portfolios on a 30-50 year trajectory to Paris aligned 1.5’C annual emissions goals. #Levels(s) wireframe for developing national green certification schemes and tracking climate action directives & regulations such as #EPBD recast for building energy and global warming potential. Used to develope IGBC #HPI index for homes. #EUTaxonomy, a dictionary of what can be defined as green in a current 3-5 year window. Of the certification schemes DNGB is closest aligned to the 3 European frameworks, however LEED 5 & BREEAM are converging on European climate targets. DNGB retrofit is a particularly useful tool for renovation, but its application up to now has been exclusively European mainland. What is particularly well argued in this article is a critique on the delayed action of certification standards, to move from reporting operational carbon emissions, to the “whole life carbon” of a building, which includes the material supply chain embodied emmissions, said to be 13% of our overall national emissions. Are we going to see Certification Schemes and European Regulatory Frameworks diverge, with certification providing a choreographed version of light Green and Regulatory frameworks providing a stricter climate aligned benchmark! Let’s hope it’s convergence and certification and benchmarks become complimentary. I’d love to get people views on this subject? #KOSMOSdk #CarbonQS #LifecycleCarbon. #LCC https://lnkd.in/ebC4uBk4
