Most online advice on systems is garbage. Here is one nugget as stinky as the trash on a hot summer day in NYC. “Founders should systematize their own business.” Telling a founder to systematize their business is reinforcing the notion that they have to keep performing like an employee in their own business when they are the biggest bottleneck. Asking a founder to systematize is the opposite of asking them to put the strategy hat on. They are just back into the technician seat, acting like an intern in their own biz. You’re giving them more homework, more things to do inside their business. And let me tell you, they do not like it. Not one bit. If you are a founder of a growing business, your star operations person should oversee your systematization. And team members should run systems FOR YOU as the founder. That’s the only way to step away from daily management And finally act like a Founder.
