To understand the rank of Fleet Admiral, one needs to consider the context of World War II. The United States was working alongside Allies who had higher ranks like Field Marshals and Fleet Admirals, which were superior to American ranks. To ensure American senior officers were not outranked, the United States established the ranks of Fleet Admiral and General of the Army, both five-star ranks. In total, nine men held these ranks. For the Navy, they were Nimitz, Halsey, King, and Leahy. In the Army, the five-star generals were Arnold, Eisenhower, Marshall, MacArthur, and Bradley.

Medal of Honor Monday: Sergeant William H. Carney Sergeant William H. Carney, born into slavery in Norfolk, Virginia 1840, became one of the most remarkable figures in American military history. Escaping the bonds of slavery through the Underground Railroad, Carney later joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the first Black regiments to fight in the Civil War. On July 18, 1863, during the assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, Carney's courage was unparalleled. As the color bearer carrying the American flag, he faced relentless enemy fire. Despite being wounded multiple times, Carney never let the flag touch the ground. He planted it on the fort's ramparts and, even as the battle raged on, carried it back to his regiment, ensuring it remained aloft. Carney's commitment to the flag and his fellow soldiers was extraordinary. His actions symbolized the fight for the Union and embodied the struggle for freedom and equality. Despite the grave personal risk, his bravery under fire is a testament to his steadfast dedication to his country and his belief in its ideals. Sergeant Carney was finally awarded the Medal of Honor in 1900, nearly 37 years after his heroic actions. The delay was due to the slow bureaucratic processes of the time, compounded by the racial prejudices that often overlooked the contributions of Black soldiers.
