August 20 is #WorldMosquitoDay and we are shedding light on Chikungunya, a lesser-known mosquito-borne disease prevalent in popular travel destinations across South-East Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Recently, the World Health Organization has highlighted that climate change is accelerating the spread of mosquito-borne viruses, creating favorable conditions for mosquitoes even in previously unaffected regions like Europe and the USA. This increases the risk of local Chikungunya transmission. Stay protected from mosquito bites: ✔ Use insect repellents ✔ Wear long clothes ✔ Use mosquito screens #Chikungunya #Mosquitos #ProtectingLivesEveryDay

Mosquitos and climate change 🦟 Climate change promises hot temperatures and increased flooding - and thus the perfect conditions for mosquitoes! Tiger mosquitos and others are spreading in Europe, and with them, communicable diseases that were previously mostly contracted through travel. West Nile virus has seen a steady rise of reported cases, with infections being reported as far north as the surroundings of Berlin. Other diseases like dengue fever, Zika virus or chikungunya are following the same trend. Created by Hanna Huld. Mosquitoes are unpredictable 🦟 It makes them fascinating and difficult to track – as the WHO/Europe Region seeks to respond better to vector-borne diseases. Experts from #Italy 🇮🇹 describe ways we can control the vector - in this case two species of mosquitoes that transmit the dengue virus - and prevent further spread. Rising temperatures across the Region due to climate change, combined with rain and increased humidity – conditions more favourable for the mosquito vectors – are likely contributing to the increase in cases. Study identifies areas of Europe at risk from dengue fever 💡 Disease is spreading due to climate change, with outbreaks in France, Italy and Spain 💡 Surveillance for Asian tiger mosquitoes at Olympics highlights threat from invasive species 💡 "the UKCEH-led advanced high-resolution modelling divides Europe as well as eastern Asia and North America into 10km squares, providing daily risk assessments for each area. The new research involves a more detailed study of the entire life cycle of a mosquito, examining the impact of local climate and competition for food on species traits such as how long it lives and the number of eggs it lays. 💡 This provides more accurate assessments of where, when and for how long there are likely to be local dengue cases." 👉 https://hubs.li/Q02RCpWj0 #DengueFever #dengue #ClimateChange #TigerMosquitoes #Olympics #InvasiveSpecies #UKCEH #mosquito #denguecases #mosquitolifecycle #asiantigermosquito #mosquitospecies

There has been an alarming spike in dengue cases around the world and vessels’ crews need to be aware of the risks and learn to recognise the symptoms – and to prevent the disease in the first place, how to keep mosquitos away. Climate change and shifting temperatures have expanded the habitat of the mosquitoes that carry the disease away from tropical and sub-tropical climates, allowing them to spread further north. And since there is no specific treatment for dengue, the best way to prevent it is to protect against mosquito bites. #seafarers #marineinsurance #gard #tropicaldisease https://lnkd.in/evz_gcf9

Summer is here, and so are the mosquitoes! These tiny insects can pose serious health risks. Mosquitoes can carry diseases like malaria, dengue, Zika, and West Nile virus 🦟 Here’s how to protect yourself effectively: - Use Repellents: Apply EPA-registered repellents like DEET or picaridin. - Wear Protective Clothing: Long sleeves and pants reduce bites; light colors help too. - Eliminate Standing Water: Empty containers that hold water to prevent breeding. - Use Mosquito Nets: Especially in high mosquito areas, insecticide-treated nets are useful. - Install Screens: Keep mosquitoes out with window and door screens. Stay safe and enjoy your summer without the annoying buzz! 🌞 #SLCo #WestNile #Mosquito

🌍✨ Celebrating World Mosquito Day 🌿🦟 As we commemorate World Mosquito Day on August 20th, it's a reminder of the significant public health challenges posed by mosquitoes—tiny creatures with a big impact. With #climatechange accelerating, we’re witnessing an expansion of mosquito habitats, allowing these vectors to spread farther and faster across the globe, including into new regions. This habitat expansion brings an increased risk of #arboviruses such as: #Denguevirus #Zikavirus #Chikungunyavirus #Oropouchevirus These diseases affect millions worldwide, creating #publichealth crises and placing additional strain on healthcare systems. It's crucial to enhance our #vector surveillance and #biosecurity measures, especially as the world warms and mosquito populations thrive in new areas. As we look to the future, our collective efforts—across governments, communities, and global health organizations—are vital in mitigating the impacts of these #vectorbornediseases. Together, we can create a healthier world for all.
