“Biophilic design is an approach to architecture that seeks to connect building occupants more closely to nature.” As #sustainability becomes increasingly important in the conversation of design longevity and #circulareconomy, it is clear that #claybrick, tile, and other #masonry products are ideal solutions for such concepts. Works have commenced on site for a full refurbishment as well as ground, first and second floor extensions to a mid-terrace home in Stoke Newington. A host of issues discovered during the design and exploration stages meant that works have ended being more structurally rigorous than initially planned and a lot of the design decisions have been dictated by the site conditions. In this project more than most form follows function and a structural reason is present behind every design move or material. Unconventional architecture requires unique formwork concepts, posing a challenge that we gladly accepted, with the construction of the tallest building in Germany used exclusively for residential purposes: the Grand Tower in Frankfurt am Main. 🏢 🏗️ The construction of the 180-metre high building brought with it a multitude of challenges. For example, the ambitious, diamond-shaped floor plan changes from storey to storey. Instead of repeating the layout of the flats on each floor and placing the flat entrances one above the other, the architects opted for different floor plans that alternate according to a predefined pattern. The solution provided by our formwork experts: The building core was constructed independently of the residential units with their varying floor plans.
