"Donate? Nah, you'll never know where the money ends up going". Not for your Movember donation. It was recently announced that a whopping CAD $53 million is invested in Canada. Grant funding and capacity building opportunities are provided to empower First Nations, Métis and Inuit-led organizations to develop, implement and evaluate innovative programs/interventions to improve First Nations, Métis and Inuit men’s social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB). It is one of 4 initiatives under Movember’s new Indigenous Social and Emotional Wellbeing Portfolio. Annual funding of up to CAD $300,000 per applicant is available for 3 years to improve SEWB among First Nations, Métis and Inuit boys and men in Canada. What incredibly sad news. Cancer Support Scotland provided vital social support to people with cancer. This is just yet another example of statutory funders failing to recognise the value of social support. Research shows that social support not only leads to better health outcomes for patients, but research around the world has shown time and time again that it saves health providers money. Social support saves the NHS money. Yet despite this, statutory funders, such as health boards, time and time again refuse to adequately fund third sector health based charities to deliver social support services they already deliver to communities across Scotland. The fact that health boards continue to refer patients to charities to get that support but with no funding attached is simply unsustainable. And this sad story proves how sector simply cannot continue to accept referrals without contributions from bodies doing the referrals.

The cost of cancer treatment in the US is exorbitant. Families struggle to not only afford medical expenses, but also their basic needs like food and housing. Patients who should be joining clinical trials often can't afford the added costs of transportation and new housing. Family Reach is a nonprofit addressing the financial difficulties of cancer, providing financial assistance and other resources to cancer patients for non-medical expenses. Did you know receiving blood from a close relative is dangerous? Blood transfusions are lifesaving, but there's a hidden danger when the blood comes from close relatives: Graft-Versus-Host Disease (GVHD), a serious and potentially fatal complication. Let's explore why this happens and how to prevent it. What is GVHD? GVHD occurs when immune cells (lymphocytes) from donated blood (the graft) attack the recipient's body (the host). Unlike typical transplants, where the recipient's immune system attacks the donor cells, here the donor cells attack the recipient. Why Close Relatives? The risk of GVHD is highest with close relatives (e.g., parent to child, sibling to sibling) because their genetic makeup, specifically Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA), are more likely to be similar. Slight differences in other antigens can cause the donor cells to mistakenly attack the recipient's body. Who is at Higher Risk? Immunocompromised individuals: Those with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients or those undergoing chemotherapy. Infants: Their immune systems are still developing. People with certain genetic disorders: Some genetic conditions predispose individuals to GVHD. Symptoms of GVHD GVHD symptoms vary depending on severity and can include: Skin rash Fever Diarrhea Liver damage Jaundice Prevention is Key The good news is that GVHD is preventable: Irradiation: Exposing donated blood to radiation kills donor lymphocytes, reducing the risk of GVHD. About Irradiation of Blood Irradiation of blood components prevents transfusion-associated GVHD by exposing blood products to gamma radiation or X-rays. This damages the DNA of residual white blood cells, rendering them incapable of causing GVHD. This process ensures the safety of blood transfusions, especially for immunocompromised patients, neonates, and those receiving stem cell transplants. https://wix.to/n2G7Tso #newblogpost

Northern Ontario residents face less access to cutting-edge cancer research, treatment and care than in other parts of the province. Lack of access to family physicians is even greater in Northern, rural and remote parts of Ontario and this leads to delayed cancer diagnosis. Northern Ontario residents have a lower life expectancy than the rest of the province by about two-and-a-half to three years. Ontario’s northern regions lag behind provincial averages in quality of health and health care. The 800,000 Northern Ontario residents are more likely to have worse health, poorer access to health care, and die earlier compared to the rest of Ontario. The Annie Parker Foundation will like to play our small part in helping Northern Ontario hereditary cancer communities. There are around 10,500 new pancreatic cancer cases in the UK every year, that's 29 every day (2016-2018). Meaning it is the 5th biggest cancer killer in the UK with 9,000 deaths every year. Not to mention Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival of all common cancers, with a five-year survival rate of less than 7%. More needs to be done. The U.K. government simply write people off every year with a lack of action on this specific cancer. It’s a failure that 80% (4 in 5) are diagnosed at stage three and stage four. With 1 in 2 people being diagnosed via an emergency, such as A&E. Pancreatic Cancer is rarely caught by a GP or at early intervention stages resulting in an extremely high death rate. Please do your bit and sign this petition. Pancreatic Cancer does not have to be a death sentence. Families don’t have to suffer like mine did. We can do more, we must do more.
