Today is the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, which forever changed our world and our nation. I vividly recall being a junior at Wakefield High School in weight training class when Coach Rivers walked in and turned on the television. We were shocked and horrified as the events unfolded. That day set me on a path that led to ten years of military service, including multiple combat deployments, followed by three years as a contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting special operations forces. We were part of the effort to confront the groups behind the attacks, and the battle that ensued shaped so much of my life. As I reflect on that day and its long-term consequences, I remember not only those who tragically died, but also the thousands of men and women who sought justice in the aftermath. However, in our pursuit of justice, I recognize the difficult reality that we have harmed many others along the way. This realization motivates me in my current work as a political violence expert focused on the United States and bridging the divides that threaten our nation. On this day, we remember. Not only are lives lost, but there is an indelible mark left on our collective soul. We must work together to create a future in which everyone is valued and we are no longer plagued by terrorism and violence, regardless of ideology.
