With 48 hours left before heading to jail, I'm raising funds for Adland Bail Out. Your donations can make a difference in breaking the cycle of youth incarceration. Australia imprisons children as young as 10, with 8,982 young people aged 10-17 under youth justice supervision. Incarceration often leads to a 'revolving door' of reoffending, with 85% of young people returning within 12 months. Shockingly, 57% of detained young people are First Nations individuals, despite representing only 4% of the Australian population. Support the cause by donating at https://lnkd.in/gRwRte8V. Let's make a positive impact together. All credit to UnLtd. for organizing this initiative. #YouthJustice #AdlandBailOut #BreakTheCycle

This is worth a 1-minute watch, $5 going straight to saving the kids... 5 kids saved in the blink of an eye - great! The problem with this really funny scene? If 100% of donations go towards the beneficiaries (saving 5 kids), who pays for the 3 staff salaries in this scene? Or the fuel of the vehicle? The Op-Ex (running cost/overhead/admin) constraints that many charities/non-profits are working under is crippling - leading to burnout, high staff turnover and organizations that struggle to get by. Something to think about when you are making your next donation. Most organizations know how best to use your donation. https://lnkd.in/eS6NsXi9

Did you know that 8,982 young people aged 10-17 were under youth justice supervision during the year in Australia? AND that while First Nations people represent only 4% of Australian population, 57% of young people in detention are First Nations young people? UnLtd. 's #AdlandBailOut aims to break this cycle of youth incarceration. The funds raised from Adland Bail Out go towards effective programs operated by UnLtd’s charity partners. Programs that are designed to help keep kids out of jail through holistic support, help young people navigate the court system through court and legal support and help young people currently incarcerated to develop skills and alternative pathways to successfully transition back into community. Our own Abby Bacon is taking part this year to raise funds for this important cause. https://lnkd.in/gtpz9ZUB Sources: AIHW, Youth justice in Australia 2021-22 report; NSW Minister for Youth Justice, July 2023

Issue 6, Brakpan's Voice. In the last couple of weeks, I have been part of several projects. Through it all, two things were highlighted. Team spirit and cooperation. We can have all the numbers we want, but if we do not work together, then numbers are irrelevant. Numbers can split, it can divide and even be subtracted, and the project gets lost in hurt and confusion. If we do not act like one loaf of bread, we can not defeat the enemy. Remember Gideon and his 300 men? They acted as one loaf of bread that destroyed the Midianite camp. Some years ago, I knew a woman who worked in a very poor community. She tried to alleviate the worst hardships, providing food, secondhand clothing, sanitary towels, that sort of thing. She started a soccer team to get kids off the street, give them a sense of identity and a healthy outlet. She got kit donated and fostered a sense of pride. One Saturday morning, she had arranged a match with a privileged club, so that the team could play a team that had professional coaching and see what the standard was. I agreed to go and cheer for the team - they wouldn't have any support. I was horrified. The privileged kids were constantly fouling the poor team, and the referee turned a blind eye. Instead, he penalised the kids who were poor, outnatched and playing a clean game (despite the yelling of some supporters). Of course they lost, but more badly than they should have. What should have been a learning, growth experience taught them that the odds are stacked against them, as they thought. No amount of hotdogs or applause from a few random people in their team colours could cheer them up. And why would it? It wouldn't change anything. Those dejected faces, so hopeful 90 minutes before, will stay with me for a very long time. We need to do better. We need to foster hope. And we need to hold privileged clubs and crooked referees in sports and in life accountable. #Privilege #Unfair #Foul Image description: Close-up, ground-level view of a well-kept soccer field.
