"To me, sustainability means balancing economic, social, and environmental value and understanding their interrelation. More than half of all economic activity is highly dependent on nature and its services. We must become more conscious of our actions and their impacts." — Christina Haupt Toft Christina Haupt Toft is the founder of Circle Consulting, a consultancy that integrates construction and biodiversity to benefit businesses and society. With 15 years of experience in finance and construction, Christina has focused the last five on sustainability and biodiversity in the built environment. Among her achievements is the development of a national method for city nature mapping in extensive collaboration within the industry, including ConTech Lab - en del af Molio. Addressing sustainability challenges in the built environment, Christina highlights the complexity and the novelty of incorporating nature-focused approaches in traditional economic sectors. She emphasises the pivotal role of financial institutions in driving sustainability by incentivising nature-positive assets and discusses the need for innovative construction materials and methods in response to raw material scarcity. 👉 Read the full article on our Journal: https://lnkd.in/ep_6ikNN

If you read one thing this week, make sure it's this brilliant sustainability report from Ylva It would be fantastic to read more reports like this - that are honest about how hard it is to be truly sustainable across real assets. And with thanks to Prof. Dr. Willy Legrand for sharing this. #esg #esginrealestate #realassets #sustainability https://lnkd.in/dwSCqqMw

An alliance of international green building entities has unveiled an initiative aimed at broadening the reach of sustainable finance within the global building industry. Among these organisations is the BUILDING RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT LIMITED, a UK-based building science centre, which hoped to bridge the investment gap between high-performing green buildings and their less sustainable counterparts. This influential coalition's report reveals a concerning statistic: about 75% of existing buildings fall short on sustainable practices. According to a report prepared by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, emissions from the construction sector could increase 13% worldwide by 2035 if additional adaptation and mitigation measures are not implemented. 🏗 The document also mentions that the increase in investment and advice in sustainable construction can translate into a reduction in emissions of up to 12.8% between now and 2035, compared to the levels recorded in 2022. Over the next decade, the IFC estimates that green buildings represent a significant low-carbon investment opportunity in emerging markets, worth nearly $24.7 trillion by 2030. The tools available to offset carbon emissions in the sector are already a reality: more energy efficient designs during the construction of new structures, the use of sustainable practices and technologies such as more efficient cooling and heating systems, smart meters, and painting . reflective on external surfaces and roofs are just a few. https://lnkd.in/gSCmc-hv ✅ At De Castro Group | Regenerative hospitality we work with cutting-edge sustainable technologies that reduce the environmental footprint of your project. Embracing Our Failures: An ‘Irresponsibility Report’ (Access: https://lnkd.in/eR9GMCZu) As I prepare for my upcoming keynote titled “Planet Hospitality: The Regeneration Awakens,” (EuroCHRIE - The Hospitality & Tourism Educators) I've been reflecting on the importance of being prepared to be proven wrong. The stigma surrounding mistakes can severely stifle creativity, both in academic circles and the professional world—perhaps even more so in the realm of sustainability. Last week, thanks to a pointer from Henri Kuokkanen, I discovered an intriguing initiative by Ylva, a Finnish Real Estate Management company owned by the students of the University of Helsinki. Ylva published an "Irresponsibility Report," a candid short document detailing where “sustainability went wrong” in 2023. Here are a few highlights: -They will break their promise of carbon neutrality. -There were uncertainties about whether partners fulfilled their commitments. -The origins and impacts of their raw materials remained unclear. -They learned a valuable lesson regarding the embodied emissions of steel used in new constructions following demolitions. And perhaps the most striking, but all-too-known, revelation: “The Better We Perform, the More We Emit.” This paradox highlights the current sustainability challenges in decoupling growth and performance from impacts—challenges that the hospitality industry, with its intensive demands on food and physical facilities, knows all too well. Kudos to Ylva for publicly acknowledging these issues and for outlining steps to rectify them. This transparency provides excellent material for class discussion and serves as a hopeful reminder: If we aren’t prepared to be wrong, we’ll never create anything original! #Sustainability #Innovation #Education #Leadership #BusinessEthics #RegenerativePractices #ClimateAction #eurochrie2024 #eurochrie
