Beckers US team marked this year’s World Environment Day at the start of June by taking positive action in and around our Chicago and Fontana sites. In Chicago, gardening was the order of the day, where the team planted flowers to promote pollination for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. As well as supporting biodiversity, outdoor collaborative activities like gardening are strongly associated with positive mental health and team spirit. Meanwhile, in Fontana, Beckers colleagues went out collecting trash to help instil pride in the neighborhood. Such grassroots actions are vital – not just for local wildlife but for cultivating an environment that supports mental and physical wellbeing. It’s another example of how at Beckers we try to work together to raise the standard of care for our world. World Environment Day is the biggest international day for the environment, celebrated by millions of people across the world. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and held annually since 1973, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. #BeckersUS #Environmentday #beckersgroup

Not all heroes wear capes – but these sure have a magic touch. We are of course talking about the hardworking pollinators sprinkling their pollen all over town, fostering diversity and growth. Urban biodiversity is crucial for our well-being, and by practicing more balcony and rooftop gardening, we can help pollinators in their quest to make our cities greener and better. So now, as spring is taking over, let’s transform our balconies, courtyards, and rooftops into irresistible green oases for bees as well as employees. At SproutWorld, we want to advocate for biodiversity - especially urban biodiversity, as it is in cities where we lack space for planting.

The amazing Bee Highway of Oslo! It comprises a network of green spaces, including rooftop gardens, flower beds, and other pollinator-friendly areas that provide bees with rest stops across the city. These spaces are filled with various plants that bloom at different times of the year, ensuring a continuous bee food supply. The impact of this infrastructure is multifaceted: - The Bee Highway supports many plant and animal species, contributing to increased urban biodiversity. - Bees are crucial pollinators, and their work contributes to the growth of plants, which in turn supports other wildlife and helps maintain healthy ecosystems. - Bee Highway indirectly supports agriculture and food production. - The project raises awareness about the importance of pollinators and encourages community involvement in environmental conservation. - Green spaces enhance the visual appeal of the city and contribute to the well-being of its residents. The Bee Highway is a prototype of an urban biodiversity corridor providing insight into how cities can integrate nature into the urban environment, creating a symbiotic relationship between humans and wildlife. It's a model that can inspire similar initiatives worldwide, demonstrating that even small changes in the urban landscape can profoundly impact the environment and biodiversity. Want to learn more? Raise your hand if you love dandelions and chickweed. Well, I think many of us who have tried to maintained a well manicured lawn can at least share a story about the battle of the dandelions. I am almost ashamed to admit the lengths I have gone to in order to eliminate them from by yard when I owned property in South Carolina. Unknown to most people, these plants serve a vital function for the early Spring pollinators, especially bees. And in our over exuberance to maintain a pretty lawn, we are actually damaging our environment in more than one way. In this episode, I am going to discuss how pollinators are a valuable part of our ecosystem, what would happen if they disappear, and what all of us can do to help. So, stayed tuned for E145, The Pillage of the Pollinators. Always remember to live sustainably because this is how we build a better future. REVEALED! Winner of the Ugliest Lawn in the World competition (and I love everything about it). 😍 You've got to hand it to Kathleen Murray from Tasmania: the ankle-breaking holes creating by a trio of bandicoots are really the icing on the (dry, inhospitable) cake. 🧁 She wins the epic first prize: a t-shirt passed on by last year's winner. 👕 But wait... there's more to this than meets the eye. 🧐 While owners of lawns like this might be getting snooty looks from house-proud neighbours in 2024, they are in fact the gardeners of the future. Because the World's Ugliest Lawn competition might be for laughs, but it's all about highlighting the need for water conservation. 💧 It started in Gotland, Sweden, where it's credited with contributing to a 5% reduction in water use. And I hope it catches on: it's madness that so many of us try to keep up lush green lawns, or cover up our gardens with plastic grass. 🏡 What if our gardens could flourish through droughts, cool us in the summer, provide homes to all kinds of bugs & beasts, and help us resist floods too? what if a climate-friendly garden, in short, was a desirable garden? 🤔 We need a new culture of what a garden can and should be. Kathleen Murray has just gone earlier (and, to be fair, much harder) than most of the rest of us! But I'd love to see it happen. 🌵 ++ P.S. I'm Alex Robinson, CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. We bring business, government and civil society together to create campaigns that make it easier and more possible for all of us to make choices that are good for the environment. These were my favorite regenerative land and garden reads from 2023. Pick one or two or all to dive deeper! Earth Keeper by Native American poet N. Scott Momaday sank right into my heart. This little treasure full of big storytelling draws us close into his cultural spiritual connection to the land and earth. You can start at the beginning or pick any page to read for contemplation and reflection. Leaning Toward Light by Tess Taylor is a collection of worldly poems from a diverse group of poets opening us into to the creative practice of gardening and our relationship to nature’s gifts. The Well-Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart-Smith reminds us of our connection to the natural world and the healing powers of gardening on our hearts, minds, spirits, and physical well being. We Are the Ark by Mary Reynolds. This is a must read for anyone who is interested in knowing more about practical regenerative practices and restoring native ecosystems within your own gardens. It’s an educational and inspirational read full of whimsical illustrations explaining the urgency of ARK (Acts of Restorative Kindness). Soil by Camille T. Dungy is a beautiful memoir reminding us of our connections to our roots, human justice, and community. At the same time her work asks us to deeply reconsider our relationship with nature and the soil in our own backyards as we take the leap into re-wilding our landscapes to save ourselves and our world. Loved every page! River Notes by Wade Davis covers the history of the Colorado River, Native American’s sacred connection to their land, and man’s destructive attempt at taming nature. It’s a story about the American West and persistent drought keeping the future of millions of Americans and our environment hanging in balance. A Bold Return to Giving A Damn by Will Harris. is a remarkable story about taking the leap into regenerative farming. If you’re interested in land regeneration, soil health, carbon sequestration, supporting family farming, and understanding the crucial role animals play in responsible land stewardship this is a must read! #soilhealth #biodiversity #ecofriendlysolutions #waterconservation #climateresilience #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #carbonsequestration #gardeninspiration #nativeplants

If you know bourbon, then you know bourbon has to be aged in charred new oak containers. American white oak barrels are traditionally used across the industry, but at current consumption rates, the American white oak tree population will begin to decline significantly in the next 10-15 years, with even more extreme declines over the next several decades. It takes 60-100 years for a white oak tree to mature, and therefore it is critical that this wonderful resource is restored to both protect biodiversity and conserve its economic use for generations to come. Glad to see this bipartisan bill introduced to do just that. The bill would create: -A formal USDA White Oak Restoration Initiative Coalition that would prioritize and coordinate white oak projects -New white oak restoration and regeneration pilot projects coordinated through the U.S. Forest Service and Department of the Interior -A private-sector white oak restoration fund -A nationwide strategy and implementation plan expanding the capacity of tree nurseries -Expanded research of white oak by land-grant universities and the U.S. Forest Service #sustainability #sustainablebourbon
