This #AutismAcceptanceMonth, it's great to hear from National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Director Dr. Joshua A. Gordon and Susan Daniels (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) National Autism Coordinator and Director of the NIMH Office of National Autism Coordination). In their roles as Chair and Executive Secretary for the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, they reaffirm their support for acceptance, inclusion, and full participation of people with autism and the importance of their voice and lived experience. 30.04.2024 Bridging Autism Awareness and Mental Health As Autism Awareness Month concludes, let's remember that supporting individuals with autism is an ongoing journey deeply connected to Mental Health Awareness Month in May. Here's what I learned from recent webinars (also things that I have to constantly remind myself as a trainee): #1 Focus on Abilities, Not Just Deficits It's about empowering those with autism with skills to thrive uniquely. Early intervention helps them develop coping mechanisms and the executive functioning skills all kids need (just as for neurotypical kids!). #2 Understanding is Key Challenges may stem from personality, family dynamics, social skills gaps, and more, not just an ASD label. Thorough assessment and seeing the whole person within their context are vital (Always eye-opening and inclusive perspectives learnt from Puveshini Rao!) #3 The Risk of Misdiagnosis Self-report online tests can't replace standardized and comprehensive assessments conducted by professionals for diagnosis. A desire for self-understanding is valid, but professional help is crucial. We need to debunk harmful myths and reduce any stigma around diagnosis. #4 Autism and Misconceptions ASD comes in many forms, and "high-functioning" doesn't mean there's no need for support. We must challenge stereotypes like "You don't look autistic." Let's look at the individuals as human beings, not based on their diagnoses. Labels can be limiting, but informed, compassionate support opens possibilities. Specially thanks to Shi Yee (Jean) Tan and Bao-Zhong Chng for sharing your valuable personal experiences. Your insights definitely left a great impact on the audience). #5 The Cost of Care Not everyone has access to diagnosis and intervention. "Autism is a rich person's disease" is sadly true for too many. Advocacy for affordable care will always be our constant wrestles... Let's continue the conversation! How can we build a more inclusive, understanding world for everyone? April is Autism Acceptance Month, and it's a time to uplift autistic voices and celebrate the incredible diversity within the neurodivergent community. This insightful article sheds light on what autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is and how we can support the community. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Listen to autistic voices: Center the experiences and perspectives of autistic individuals in research, policy-making, and advocacy efforts. "Nothing about us without us". 2️⃣ Use respectful language: Avoid harmful labels and language like "low-functioning" or "high-functioning." Respect individuals' preferences when it comes to identity. 3️⃣ Support autistic-run organizations. 4️⃣ Educate: Stay informed about autism and challenge stereotypes by sharing accurate information. Take a moment to reflect before sharing content that may perpetuate harmful myths about autism. https://lnkd.in/ecty5H93 #ProFoundReads #Accessibility #DisabilityInclusion #AutismAcceptance #Neurodiversity #DEI [Credit: Samantha Edwards, Zoe Gross]

World Autism Awareness Day, which is celebrated on April 2, is an opportunity to celebrate the unique perspectives and talents of individuals on the autism spectrum. This year’s theme is "Moving from Surviving to Thriving: Autistic Individuals Share Regional Perspectives." Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) constitutes a diverse group of conditions related to development of the brain; which refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first 2 years of life. As per the WHO, it is estimated that worldwide, about 1 in 100 children has autism. Among the most common co-occurring conditions are: · attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) · anxiety and depression · gastrointestinal (GI) disorders · seizures · epilepsy · sleep disorders and self-injury Autism is a lifelong condition, and an autistic person’s needs, strengths and challenges may change over time. As they transition through life stages, they may need different types of support and accommodations. Early intervention and therapies can make a big difference in a person’s skills and outcomes later in life. The monitoring of child development as part of routine maternal and child health care is recommended. Remember, the key to empowerment is listening, understanding, and celebrating the diverse voices within the autism community. Together, let's continue to advocate for inclusivity, acceptance, and empowerment of autistic voices every day. The waiting times for autism diagnosis within the NHS are increasing, shedding light on a much broader issue 👇 The government must focus on securing essential support for individuals to thrive in their communities. This requires a holistic approach that examines all aspects of the system, from diagnosis to education, employment, and mental health. #AutismAwareness
