Discover the faces driving positive change and progress in Belton as we highlight dedicated members of our city government! Meet Jenna Fernandez, our talented City Planner. Jenna's role is all about making Belton a better place to live. Jenna helps review and create new developments in our city and is the point person for planning/development questions. Working closely with developers to ensure their projects align with Belton's vision and rules, she also presents these projects to the Planning Commission, sharing the city's recommendations. Jenna handles permits for various projects, making sure they follow the rules and fit into their neighborhoods. She's also responsible for keeping our long-term plans, like the Comprehensive Plan, up to date. Using her graphic design skills, she makes planning information easier to understand for the public (and her co-workers). Her journey into public service began in college when she studied planning, fueled by her desire to make the world a better place. One of Jenna's lesser known, but most impactful, skills is her willingness to listen and help. If you have questions about a project, need creative solutions, or just want to chat about an idea, Jenna's door is always open. Outside of work, she enjoys tending to her garden, going to concerts, exploring the city, and watching horror movies, her favorite is "Contact." A movie that she says is the perfect combination of nostalgia, aliens, and inspiration. Next time you see Jenna, strike up a conversation about her latest gardening project or share your thoughts on horror movies. You'll find an approachable City Planner dedicated to making Belton an even better place to call home.

Meet Claire Canaan: Director of Emergency Management for the City of Belton Claire Canaan started Monday (9/9/2024) as the City's new Director of Emergency Management, bringing nearly 15 years of experience in public service, including law enforcement and emergency management. In her new role, Claire oversees the city's emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts. Her work involves developing emergency plans, training first responders, managing public information, and coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure Belton is ready for any disaster. Claire's passion for public service comes from a deep commitment to helping people during challenging times. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, staying active, and finding time to recharge through reading and outdoor activities. One lesser-known aspect of her job is that emergency management extends beyond major disasters. Claire also ensures public safety at local events, such as parades and festivals, and supports first responders in managing the psychological toll of their work. Her favorite project? Coordinating a week-long emergency management training for 74 city and county partners at the Emergency Management Institute in Maryland—a rewarding experience that strengthened the community. Claire’s favorite movie is The Sandlot, which she loves for its nostalgic reminder to cherish the simple moments in life. If she could have any superpower, it would be time travel, offering endless opportunities for discovery and connection. If you see Claire, make sure to give her a big Belton welcome as she works to keep the community safe!
