Winner of the Ugliest Lawn in the World competition (and I love everything about it). 😍 You've got to hand it to Kathleen Murray from Tasmania: the ankle-breaking holes creating by a trio of bandicoots are really the icing on the (dry, inhospitable) cake. 🧁 She wins the epic first prize: a t-shirt passed on by last year's winner. 👕 But wait... there's more to this than meets the eye. 🧐 While owners of lawns like this might be getting snooty looks from house-proud neighbours in 2024, they are in fact the gardeners of the future. Because the World's Ugliest Lawn competition might be for laughs, but it's all about highlighting the need for water conservation. 💧 It started in Gotland, Sweden, where it's credited with contributing to a 5% reduction in water use. And I hope it catches on: it's madness that so many of us try to keep up lush green lawns, or cover up our gardens with plastic grass. 🏡 What if our gardens could flourish through droughts, cool us in the summer, provide homes to all kinds of bugs & beasts, and help us resist floods too? what if a climate-friendly garden, in short, was a desirable garden? 🤔 We need a new culture of what a garden can and should be. Beachgoers across Lincolnshire urged not to litter when heading to the seaside It comes as the marine conservation charity said 9 out of 10 beach litter items are plastic, such as bottles, cans and lids. Holidaymakers across the Lincolnshire Coast are being urged to re-use plastics to reduce waste and protect the environment this summer. It's as the marine conservation charity's found litter such as inflatables, bottles and cans were found on almost all UK beaches last year. Lianne Havell, runs the Sutton on Sea beachcare clean up and says plastic pollution is a major threat to our ocean: "Last year in the first couple of days of August we cleared just three bags of rubbish. This year it's been 13. "So there's been one heck of an increase. There's plenty of bins. "Please come and enjoy the coast - but remove your rubbish to a bin" Leaving litter it can be a huge threat to wildlife: Lianne says: "It can cause all sorts of problems if it's not tidied. "We've seen seabirds picking up wipes and things off the beach to chew, We don't want to see strangled sealife. We don't want to see injured mammals. Since 2014, the League to Save Lake Tahoe has led the Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanup on July 5th to address this issue. Why It Matters:   🌊 Protecting Our Shores: Without intervention, litter left behind can pollute Lake Tahoe’s pristine waters. This annual cleanup helps prevent thousands of pounds of trash from entering the lake. 💪Community Effort: This year, a record 789 volunteers participated, demonstrating the power of community in preserving Tahoe’s natural beauty. Over the past 11 years, volunteers have removed more than 26,000 pounds of litter from Tahoe’s shores. Data-Driven Success:  📊 Trend Insights: Detailed data collected each year helps identify litter hot spots and inform management strategies. For instance, the Zephyr Shoals area saw a 97% reduction in litter in 2024 thanks to new beach management strategies under the Tahoe Blue Beaches program. 🔬 Science to Solutions: Our data-driven approach supports initiatives like local bans on single-use plastics and the use of beach-cleaning robots. These measures, combined with community efforts, ensure long-term protection for Lake Tahoe. Delighted to share with you the results from our annual event ‘The Big Weigh In’ - nationally our volunteers collected just under 1.4 tonnes in 1 day which is nearly the weight of a baby Humpback Whale 🐋 29 counties 512 volunteers 82 groups Weirdest finds: A prosthetic leg 8 wooden crosses A drone A Tayto crisp packet from the late 90’s 220 gunshot cartridges on one beach So incredibly over 500 volunteers took part but Co Galway aced this year’s challenge with a grand total of: 442kgs, 1 particular cleanup in Connemara had 5 people and they were able to clean 249kgs off a tiny beach in Connemara. This as ever was primarily trawler pollution which is typical for the West Coast. Another mighty cleanup was in Galway, they collected 179kgs with yet another tiny group We’d love to get all serious on you about the damage that is happening around our seas and oceans due to plastic pollution and climate change but that’s just not us … and you all know all about it, so instead as ever we will only focus on what an AMAZING job was done on Sunday and what can be done to help save our marine life, our oceans and sea and our planet.
