There is a big experiment in dental care emerging in Canada. It could transform how dental services are delivered. The Canadian government is creating the largest group dental plan in the country for Canadians who can't or won't visit the dentist. This includes Seniors, Special Needs and low-income families. About 9 million adults are expected to join. Similar to what's happened in the US and the UK, Canadian dentists are grumpy about a big new publicly-funded and focused plan. Indeed, fewer than 1 in 5 have so far joined the plan. Why? As explained, the fees are too low. There was insufficient consultation. This new plan could distort lucrative private dental insurance. However, the real reasons for resisting a massive expansion in demand for dental services may be quite different. Two reasons come to mind: root caries (cavities at the gum line), and #independenthygienists. Restoring root caries is difficult, expensive and unrewarding. Imagine seeing more mouths like below. Perhaps half of Seniors suffer from root caries. Second, this new national dental plan will spur expansion of independent hygienists who operate independently of the dentist. Independent hygienists are already the fastest growing healthcare profession, but watch what happens when millions of seniors search for preventive care like #Prevora. The Canada Dental Care Plan will move the focus to more prevention in the community. It is establishing a new model of dental care.

This weekend, members of the Canadian Dental Leaders Forum met in Toronto to discuss access to oral health care and the importance of a sustainable #CanadianDentalCarePlan (CDCP) which is expected to be announced by the Federal Government in the coming weeks. Members of the CDLF include the Canadian Dental Association and the Presidents and CEOs of provincial and territorial dental associations. A flexible CDCP is the pathway for a healthier future for Canadians. Unfortunately, 2.26 million school days are missed annually in Canada due to dental-related illnesses and tooth decay alone accounts for a third of day surgeries for young children. But it doesn't stop there. More than half (58.2%) of older Canadians aged 65 years and older reported not having any dental insurance coverage, leaving many without access to essential oral health. #Dentists see firsthand the impact that poor oral health can have on a person’s overall health and understand the challenges faced by patients. That’s why sharing the frontline expertise of dentists can help ensure the CDCP will reach those who need it most. The federal government is allocating $13 billion for the CDCP over the next five years, along with $4.4 billion in ongoing support. This marks a substantial leap towards enhancing oral health, particularly for those in vulnerable situations. 📋 A flexible program is a must, and it should include: ✔️ Services and visits free from financial worries ✔️ Allow individuals to receive the care they need ✔️ Recognize different jurisdictional realities across Canada ✔️ Minimize administrative burdens ✔️ Use existing dental networks #DentalCare2023 #Dentistry #OralHealth

Nearly half of #Medicare beneficiaries didn't visit a dentist in 2019 -- most of them citing as a factor. As #AEP comes to a close, here's some options to explore: ~Many #MedicareAdvantage plans include a preventive and/or comprehensive dental benefit. Availability is dependent on service area. ~Clients may be eligible through an employer-sponsored plan, employer-sponsored retiree plan, or through #Medicaid. ~Your clients always can choose a dental #HMO, dental #PPO, or a discount dental plan. Many of these policies can be enrolled in year-round.

Synchrony's Health & Wellness team launched the Lifetime of Care campaign to help educate consumers about the healthcare costs individuals may expect to pay over their lifetime. The goal is to help consumers prepare now for expenses they may incur today and in the future. This morning, on behalf of CareCredit, Synchrony released new research on #dental care costs in America, revealing that the average American can expect to pay between $51,000 and $95,000+ in their lifetime, not including complex dental treatments. We also learned that many are delaying or forgoing dental care because of costs…often to the detriment of their health. Please take a moment to read and learn more about the findings and the ways in which people can plan for and pay for the care they want and need at the link: https://lnkd.in/grUUn6Sc #lifetimeofcare #dentalpayments
