🏋️♂️ Players' workload in football is now a critical issue. ⚽ The World Leagues Association (WLA) has reviewed the newly released “Player Workload Monitoring Report 2024” from FIFPRO. 📊 A comprehensive report based on the latest data highlights the unsustainable trend of continually adding international matches to the calendar. 📅 Not only does the international calendar post-2024 make it increasingly challenging for national leagues to manage their competitions, but it also places excessive demands on players. ⚖️ Recent legal actions initiated by leagues and player unions across Europe underscore the lack of a fair and inclusive process by FIFA on calendar decisions. 🤝 The WLA remains committed to engaging in dialogue to reassess decisions made at the international level with all stakeholders. 🔗 Full media release here: https://lnkd.in/eJU6GvvP

With the football Euro’s upon us I think the graphic below is vital for national team coaches… It shows the Extended Challenge Point from Hodges and Lohse (building on the work of Guadagnoli and Lee in the early 2000’s)… Practice to transfer Practice to learn Practice to maintain My own personal judgement & decision-making for the Euro’s - I’d argue most, if not all, activities should lie in ‘practice to transfer’… I would do very little, if any maintenance practice. And minimal learning practice (other than running patterns and team shape - and even then I’d have that opposed as often as possible). To learn more, check out my conversation with Professors’ Lohse and Hodges on The Sport Psych Show here: https://lnkd.in/e_SZYC3v

I love how data is informing every industry. Take football (aka soccer) for example. This is top of mind for me as like many overseas Englishmen I have been trying to justify to myself why I keep getting up in the middle of the night to watch the England football team fail to live up to expectations at Euro 24 😠 Now thanks to the data company Opta Sports and the range of statistics they generate for every match I can at least now understand why. The trick though with any set of data is to know which is the most important data and how to use it. Too many KPIs = inaction, not insight! In the case of England it looks like their problem is the PPDA metric, where they rank in the bottom 10% of teams. What is PPDA I hear you say? PPDA stands for Passes Per Defensive Action which simplistically means they are allowing their opponents to hang onto the ball too long without putting enough pressure on. Or to use football jargon, they are not pressing high or hard enough! Ok now we’ve identified the problem we can fix it, I am feeling much better already about tomorrow's 5am game versus Slovenia ⚽ And looking forward to a fresh set of data to inform the knock out stages! #datainforms #firsttrophysince1966
