For those who feel they ought to know more about China, I highly recommend the Economist's excellent podcast Drum Tower. This week's episode "Tick tock for TikTok" presents China's side of the TikTok debate (a viewpoint that I feel is undercovered in Western media). Stepping back from all the hype and politicisation, does Chinese ownership of TikTok really pose a threat to America? #tiktok #china #dataprotection #socialmedia https://lnkd.in/eyqQriDz

https://lnkd.in/dkY7G4Zr Outcomes of China’s Third Plenum: A Conversation with Scott Kennedy Center for Strategic & International Studies 1 Aug 2024 ChinaPower In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Dr. Scott Kennedy joins us to discuss the major themes from China's long-anticipated Third Plenum and what it signaled for China’s economic trajectory in the coming decade. Dr. Kennedy highlights the continuity that the Third Plenum presented, with no drastic economic measures introduced. However, he underscores the idea that Chinese leadership’s statist approach may pose additional challenges in addressing domestic issues. Dr. Kennedy also discusses China’s linkage between national security and economic progress and its shift toward high-tech development to build resilience and decrease foreign reliance. Finally, Dr. Kennedy provides predictions on where China’s economic growth will be in the next two years.

CHINA IN MENA At a time when China’s global footprint is getting deeper and deeper, it has never been more important to understand its foreign policy and the Middle East is one of the world’s most consequential regions: home to major religions, diverse cultural and social heritage, central to global energy markets, and of course, geopolitics, linking people and markets in Asia, Africa and Europe. This show will help you understand what China is doing in the region, and how the region is engaging with China as an increasingly important external power.

New ReConnect China -podcast out! Link to the podcast: https://lnkd.in/dDvzPbuC Connectivity initiatives have become a major instrument in the competition among major powers. How should the EU position itself in this context? In this episode, Mario Esteban, Senior Analyst at Elcano Royal Institute, talks with Aurelio Insisa, Senior fellow at the Istituto Affari Internazionali about their recent ReConnect China Policy Brief in which they argue that a geopolitical framing of the EU’s Global Gateway is counterproductive for the EU. They discuss why this is the case, and how a more positive framing of the initiative can help improve the Global Gateway’s standing in the Global South. We all need to get out more. Keyu Jin has just published a book on the Chinese economic model - which I am about to get given how excellent this overview is. My recent Grimshaw cities podcast with Michael Keith was in part about the separate stories of cities and their development strategies in Asia compared with the European/US/Australian models. She points to an unexpected trend which is how China's model has combined political centralisation - which we know about - with local government economic innovation - which we know less about. The UK in particular has gone in the opposite direction: political decentralisation and economic centralisation! How's that going?
